newsflash. gamedevelopers don't make games for you out of the kindness of their hearts. gamedevelopers are businesses. while the greats started out of love of the medium, that love and passion won't pay their mortgages.
they're not "giving in", they're making money so that they can not only keep on living the lives they live, but also keep doing what they like most; developing games.
if they did it purely out of love, they'd all be making niche games that only three people other than them like and distributing them for free. how long do you think such a corporation would exist?
I wasn't complaining, I was rationalizing the situation for those that are whining, which is made pretty clear by the end of the sentence that you cut out. I understand its a business, as is nearly every major game dev in existence.

That pretty much sums it up. You have ten people. 8 play consoles and two play PCs. Who will the developers cater to? It's not only business savvy, but practical in the sense that more people will be satisfied. There will always be PC gamers. But face it, they are a dying breed...wether you like it or not...
It's true. There are still large groups of PC followers for games created by such developers as Valve and id. But I see the majority of people going the console route. Of course, I haven't seen any statistics on this and could be wrong. It's a simple observation.
I really don't want to turn the Rage thread into a PC vs Console thread. We've done this many times before...

This is a pile of horseshit. I have no idea where you get this info but I'm sure it's from a retard. Not sure though.
PC gaming alone (not including XBox/PS) is $16.2 billion and grew a shit-ton last year over the previous which was a paltry $11 billion. This is more than any of the console and portable systems from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Just in North America and Western Europe the PC is the leading platform with over $6 billion in combined revenue from just those markets. All the consoles combined generate about $10 billion more revenue than the PC, but the PC is still the single largest of any platform. World of Warcraft does $1 billion all by itself, while the two latest CoD games did $1 billion on all platforms combined. Anything with these kinds of numbers is not a "dying breed".
These are times of record profits for PC games. With everyone on board with digital distribution (or at least their version of it) the spigot of cash will not be drying up anytime soon, particularly since nearly every single PC user on the planet has a gaming system right in front of them.

It doesn't mean we aren't allowed to smack down your misinformed nonsense.
The only good textures in this game are character and weapon textures. I can guarantee that if you look directly at the floor at any point in Rage, you will see an appalling low res testure. Rage looks okay at a distance, but the textures just can't stand up to scrutiny.
It's so bad, sometimes it's even hard trying to see what an object is.
I'll fully back up brisk's opinion here, because this really isn't the technical achievement we've come to expect from id Software.
But hey, at least it runs at a constant 60fps.
As for gameplay, there's some fun to be had here, but at the same time, this feels more rail-roaded than any id game I've ever played. Generally speaking, in past id games, if you could see somewhere, you could probably get there. Sure, maps were limited, but those limits were clear to see.
Rage has invisible walls all over the place, with scenery that begs for exploration but then prevents it for no aparent reason.
Look, I'm not expecting FO New Vegas levels of exploration, but so many times in Rage I've thought "Wouldn't it be interesting to explore over there", only to find the way blocked. It's just one massive pricktease, and a bit of a munter to boot.
Just started playing this game a bit. A few quick changes to the config file for high resolution textures and 100-degree FoV and I'm enjoying it so far. My first impressions:
I find most of the textures (~95%) are actually very high quality, especially on all the terrain. There are a few surfaces on walls and on certain models that are comparatively lower resolutions. I think the problem is that the lower resolution stuff just sticks out a bit like a sore thumb compared to the super high fidelity of the rest of the world environment. So even while the low resolution stuff is in the minority, it becomes a focal point when juxtaposed next to all the high resolution stuff. Most of it looks amazing, but some of the low quality stuff sticks out.
I have to say there the art direction in this game is amazing. It's amazing how much detail they went in to make things look grungy, the effect is something I haven't seen in any other game. The place looks like it had literally been layered with dust, grime and disuse. Most games slap on a grungy texture with a couple of decals over top. Rage looks like the artists layered on cracks, grunge, dust, dents, burn marks, and then a second coat of everything above for good measure, so the world doesn't look like a texture, but an actual surface.
For the most part, lighting looks very good, but there's something strange about specular lighting on surfaces. I think surfaces either look really shiny or completely matte, reminds me a bit like Half-Life 2. I'm not sure if certain surfaces are missing specular and normal maps and have everything baked into the megatexture or if just something weird about how the lights interact with certain surfaces so the specular maps aren't very apparent. I don't think most people notice this, that's just the computer graphics geek in me that's a little nitpicky about lighting algorithms and multitextured surfaces.
I'm amazed how smoothly this game runs and it's something that is immediately apparent when starting the game. Running at 60Hz does feel different. Almost all modern games are designed to run at 30Hz so I'm impressed with how much they managed to squeeze performance onto a game running at twice the framerate. Generally speaking, twice the framerate means 1/2 the graphics fidelity you can run.
Gameplay-wise, Rage is really just a solid FPS. It's not to be confused with a RPG at all. Weapons feel and sound solid. Enemy animations are impressively fluid. I agree with the excessive clipping job mentioned by others above, it certainly breaks immersion when you have invisible clip everywhere.
I'm digging the fact that each group has its own personality and I think their behavior combined with the animations and speech is really entertaining. The way the mutants take advantage of the terrain is awesome the first time you see each new trick. Or the vocalized team work of the Shrouded. I'm really curious to see how the authority play.
The racing AI is really weak though. Way too easy to beat.
I feel like walking into some kind of backwards universe coming into this thread, it sucks arse... I feel like I've already got a black eye from a fight I haven't had yet... I don't I DARE take a piss...
I think the game looks stunning. When its all working fine and everything is loaded correct, YES, there are a few places that just look terrible, and yes, the over all resolution isn't the best. But looking at it from an artistic point of view, my jaw was on the floor 99% of the time. Its a stunning game, hand crafted in EVERY location, and when you stop for a second and look at the detail poured into a place that you didn't even stop to look at, you just think even higher of the guys at id software.
Sure, ok, would I like higher resolution? You bet your arse. But am I happy I can run a new game from id at max res, WITH AA, and not have my FPS dip from 60 even when I'm fighting 12 mutants? You bet your arse.
Oh and moaning about physics objects... REALLY...
Christ, I can honestly say now I know how you guys have felt reading my posts all these years... Most of you sound like crack heads...
