@InsaneKid: On the first pic. Shouldn't the girders for the glass be at the rims?

@o'dium, that game looks pretty cool. Is development for the iPhone difficult? I know you need a mac, right?

Its actually nearly the same as doing it for a normal opengl PC game. You don't "NEED" a Mac to make the game, or an iPhone even, you can make it with those in mind on a PC, and test it on a PC screen. However, you do need to compile final code on a Mac (Which is utterly stupid to me) and obviously then get the code onto the iPhone. But you can easiuly emulate the iPhone hardware on PC as Apple have released the SDK, its just not as, lets say "easy" as it would be on a Mac.

It really is quite a bit stupid to say to the largest population "Yeah you cant make apps on windows" for no reason at all.

Making the game though is fun as hell, trying to get everything into tiny textures is great, so much better than worrying if the speco n your 2048x2048 wall texture thats seen from 90 miles away looks good when hit with a pointlight lol :D

Well, that's kinda my deal these days. I'm really trying to get into more "casual" game development, that deals with smaller games, like facebook, iphone and live arcade games, mostly because I'm not really a next gen kinda guy, I just don't like new games and the resources needed to create them--- it's stupid expensive and games like Heroes of Might and Magic 2 are still better than everything new...
Well, good luck with it, _looks_ solid. It reminds me about the new Zelda for DS.

Gameplay is always where its at and its a shame that most new games don't care so much about that, they just tack on fancy visuals :( Thats probably why I still play SNES games all the time, just because most of them are just classics, totally fun.

Heres some more shots btw with the actual texture sheets on and the polycount:

Hopefully not long, I've done a lot more than whats shown, just polishing, but should be a couple of months with real life getting in the way lol.

I love the small things, like the "misc stuff" shot, and the graves out of the church.

BTW, what's the game like? Arcade or Adventure?

Adventure. I like to think of it as Zelda DS graphics style meets Link to the Past gameplay style.

Hahaha. You should turn the lightning gun into a Picachu. And when you squeeze him he shoots lightning. *Puff puff*

@Noruen: Love it. Reminds me of UT. Still don'f ully get how you can make those wonderful mountains out of triangulated grid. :D

Is there a tutorial for terrain-mapping? I did have hard times trying to keep everything on the grid in gtk 1.5. I do remember SOCK's terrain tutorial but i still dont know how to get a proper workflow (keeping everything on grid; to combine a rockfloor with rockwall...). Always wanted to create a cave, but I am lacking some terrain-skills....

Insanekid: are you running your map on the highest texture quality setting? some of the textures seem somewhat blurry... looking pretty cool though!
skin: i think the "garrish/trippy" look has potential, but it just looks sort of random ATM, "planned garrish" might be something to look into?
hipshot: i agree with your sentiments about newer games...
odium: looks like fun! what sort of engine is it running on?

Trying to detail areas in an even-handed manner. I'd like to just take each area and just add all sorts of fanciness to them, but I am trying to not spend 4 more years on the same map as well. ;)

As nittin said, the terrain is excellent.

I want to warn you about the darkness on crt monitors. It's visible on the tft, but on the crt the screenies are almost plain black.

I think I've said it so many times, well at least one time before.
The style I created, this cyber-punk tech noir, influenced by Terminator, Blade Runner and such was too much of a project for this level, that I wanted to release pretty quickly.
So, I just took the layout of the level and switched all graphics on it, to a theme I've done before and that I'm much more comfortable doing fast.
This is still laying around saved for a future layout. I don't scrap entire levels or themes I put so many hours in, I just save them for a bit later when I have come up with solutions to why I stopped working on them.

Skin, they are just plain colored textures using add and is slightly emitting light.

Code: Select all

textures/hipshot_m13/red
{
	qer_editorimage textures/hipshot_m13/red.jpg
	qer_trans .5
	surfaceparm trans
	surfaceparm nolightmap
	surfaceparm nomarks
	surfaceparm nonsolid
	nopicmip
	noMipMaps
	q3map_surfacelight 100
	cull none
	{
		map textures/hipshot_m13/red.jpg
		blendfunc add
		rgbGen identity
	}
	{
		map textures/hipshot_m13/scan.jpg
		blendfunc add
		//tcmod scale .5 .5
		tcmod scroll 0 -2
		rgbGen identity
	}
}
