Planet Terror - 8/10

Robert Rodriguez's contribution to the Grindhouse feature was totally fucking hilarious. Funniest movie I've seen in, like forever. Bucketloads of blood splatter, zombies, cripple jokes and fantastically over the top action. And a script and dialogue straight out of a low budget, C rate early 80's straight-to-video action flick. Amazing.

Tarantino's Death Proof had better dialogue, but this one had way better action.

Strongly recommended (and watch out for the rocket jump over the wall just before the end).

no I saw it at the cinema, they were released separately over here, I caught Death Proof a month or so ago

Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom: 5/10

Interestingly conceived, drawing tripartite inspiration from the Marquis de Sade, Dante Alighieri (using the Inferno as a structural methodology), and Benito Mussolini (in its WW2-era, fascist setting), this attack on politics and the politics of sex is a powerful indictment of fascism. Nevertheless, I found it awfully boring, despite its constant attempt to push viewers away from attachment and identification (mostly through grisly and obscene acts involving the sexual degradation and mutilation/killing of teenagers by four perverted and sadistic adults representing the estates: a Duke, a Bishop, a President, and a Magistrate) in order to comprehend its determined and overly explicit (in every sense of the word) message. Nice cinematography, but the film simply didn't resonate with me.

Sweet Movie: 9/10

This is another political polemic, but one which mobilizes satire and fun, resulting in an enjoyable viewing experience. (And as much as a movie such as Salo can succeed as a viewing experience by trying to be as unenjoyable as possible, it simply didn't for me.) Sweet Movie makes for similarly difficult viewing -- using highly violent and (many would say degrading) sexual subject matter, the corruption and killing of children, lots of nudity, fecal play (though nothing to compare to Salo's "poo feast"), etc. etc., as well as documentary footage of the disinterment of victims of the Katyn Forest massacre in Yugoslavia at the hand of Stalin -- to make its point, which is an indictment of capitalism and communism propelled by two distinct storylines (one representing each ideology) which begin as polar opposites but are ultimately conflated into one oppressive, fascist ideology. Brilliantly conceived, smartly executed, beautifully shot -- but it has its rough spots and occasionally flies over the top. Did I mention there's a lengthy scene involving the hottest woman in the word, totally naked, writhing seductively around in a pool of liquid chocolate?

Hot Fuzz
Brilliantly executed satire. Rarely LOL funny, but I was either smirking or on the edge of giggling for almost the entire movie. The subtle humor and the over the top stuff were both very well done.

Stardust: 8/10

I don't even remember the last time I laughed so much during a comedy -- and Stardust manages to be a passable postmodern adventure-fairytale simultaneously. It's so tongue-in-cheek, so deliciously self-conscious and over the top, that it becomes impossible not to forgive the occasional lapse into serious (and relatively juvenile) fantasy. Don't see it for the plot or the tension -- although it was constructed in such a way that a film buff adult could take a wide-eyed kid to this movie and each would appreciate it fully but in totally different ways -- the beauty of the thing is that it works on two levels (hell, just about every level). Peter O'Toole (briefly), Michelle Pfeiffer, etc. etc., just go see it it's hilarious.

not yet, but when it is, they'll be released separately (Deathproof and Planet Terror) and not as a "double feature" talk about sticking it to the consumer.

It's better that way, as we now get an extended version of both movies.

yep, but i'd settle for paying for a one-shot dual DVD and have it released on one date. iirc, one's in sept and the other oct.

It's not even being screened here until November, and that's just Death Proof. Fuck knows when Planet Terror is being released.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 5/10

These seem to be coming off an assembly line nowadays. Basically the same plot over and over; Harry is grumpy, alienating his friends. Voldemort attacks, but is defeated by Harry (yet he escapes) with some help from his friends. Everyone realize that they have been stupid and they all become friends again. The End.

Add to that some half-assed directing and dull sfx.

yah, Im really pissed off at that too. I went to see Grindhouse opening week, and when I walked out of the theater 3 hours later...It was one of the first times in my life I said Holy shit did I get my money's worth. To split the films up is a fucking slap in the face of the core audience. They obviously Knew that not everyone likes bad movies because theyre so bad. When they pull something like this..then all I feel is that the films were not made as an inside joke slash thanks to all the hardcore fans...but hey, we're famous directors and you'll come to any steaming pile of shit I release. Which is how I feel that now theyre putting back the " missing reels" that made the experience all the more immersive.

Though, as a fanboy ....this is a shot from a scene QT is putting back into death proof....and its kinda got me kinda interested...

i wonder what they plan on doing with the fake trailers that were played during "intermission"

Um, isn't that scene in the movie already? At the store, one girl goes in and buys cigarettes and a magazine and the other two stay in the car talking shit?

And yea, I'd pay to see that "Machete" movie, that looked awesome.

I read on some DVD news forum that they will be included with both releases.

I fully understand why people are upset about this, but personally I'm perfectly happy, because I have no desire whatsoever to own Planet Terror, whereas I want Death Proof, and for it to be an extended version, no less, makes me happy in my pants.

Bourne Ultimatum - 6/10

Same as the last 2, very enjoyable. Rates below diehard as a standalone action flick.

The 'having to make contact with a member of the CIA while confounding everyone who knows full well it's about to go down' is now wearing severely thin after about 12 instances of basically the same setup across the 3 films.

Great film, done with so much love and hate to America. Really funny and good-spirited. Great cast!

Pans Labyrinth 8/10
Amazing, amazing, amazing visuals. Story was slightly predictable, but it still had be entertained through the whole thing. Go rent this for the art direction!

Once Upon A Time In America 9/10
Hadn't seen this classic before, but wow, what an epic film. The scope of this film is amazing, the actors are brilliant (especially De Niro and James Woods). I wish it was thirty minutes to an hour shorter though, because I would love to see it again

Yea, the only thing that kinda ticked me off in the movie was part of one of those. When he's in the guy's office, and calls him just to let him know he's standing there ( "If you were here, we'd be having this talk face to face" ), that part got a lot of laughs in the theater. But I was just thinking, "Why did he do that?" That didn't help him in any way. If he hadn't made the call, he would have been able to run over to his final destination and find the guy he was looking for with a nice head start, without 4 truckloads of agents on his heels.

It only benefited his enemies.
