Thief 3 had some great parts that gave you those feelings of "Holyyy SHIT!!!!" RUN!
Playing with headphones and in the dark made it the best.
Same with Doom III. PLaying it before reading about all the spoilers
was a plus.
I do say casedoggs video was a good one watching. I have it here
but don't have any space to host it. If anyone wants it PM me and I'll email it. It's only 5.8 megs.

Awesome puzzle/adventure game... one of the only ones i remember where you could actually fuck up to the point of not being able to win.

Ah, the world before YouTube.

Wow, I thought Quake III was meant to be hardcore. Why are they all such pussies?

Now that this thread has been resurrected, definitely felt some genuine fear playing through Resident Evil VII. Sure the combat in places, but also the grandma in the wheelchair that randomly appears, but doesn't do anything 99% of the time.

Outlast.
I never finished the game because I realized I just didn't feel good while playing it.

Doom got me back in the day; opened a door and a Pinky was there munching my face.
I hate scary games so tend to not play them. Same for films.

I used to love scarey games, and part of me still does.
But I noped out of Resident Evil 7 at the first boss fight; not because of the boss, but because the tension and atmosphere was just dripping, and had built up so much by that time, I was just a nervous wreck.
I can appreciate the game for bringing a lot of that "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" horror to gaming, and graphically, it was incredible (and paved the way for the excellent set of REMakes we've had recently.)
But it's just too much for me these days.
Similarly, I know in my bones that one of the best levels in gaming ever is Shalebridge Cradle from Thief: Deadly Shadows.
The guy who made it, Jordan Thomas, was a modder for the first two games, and has since gone on to make other standout levels and games, such as Bioshock's Fort Frolic.
But it will take a lot for me to ever play that level again. It so deftly flips the game's mechanics on its head, and makes you crave the light, where up until that point, the whole game has been about the power of lurking in the shadows.

Resident Evil 2 was the only one to do it. Scared the fucking crap out of me when that dog jumps through the window early in the game.
