As long as you show up with a decent-looking watch it doesn't matter if it cost you 15$ or 150 does it? At least that's how i see it

But I guess that may be different in different businesses.
Dress to impress, dress for success.
Somebody that doesn't care about their appearance will give two shits about your company.

I work in sales and it's a very image focused sales job, there are certain things that I call one percent-ers - they don't make or break the deal but they all contribute - this is why I spend money on nice ties, nice shoes and now nice watches.
It's not a penis extension issue, it's not a boys club pissing contest - it's pride in ones personal appearance.

IMO caring about personal appearance and image (within reason) is pretty applicable in any field .

i agree with torment as far as thinking about your appearance is relevant to pretty much any line of work, but your post is total bollocks.
we've got a linux nerd and a stockroom guy that are fucking heroes for this place, but they both look like stig of the dump. i've worked with plenty of crusties, hippies, bikers and generally scruffy people that are hard working and dilligent. by the same token, i've rarely worked with scruffy people that are lazy or incompetant.
sure you might not put them on reception, but that's not what you hire people like that for. people in nice suits with good smiles are ten a penny, just hire a temp and fire them whenever you redecorate the office.
i guess things could be different in the states, the culture over there is pretty alien to me.

it's really not... unless you're talking about door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.
can't really get away with lying - you'll be found out pretty quick - particularly at a corporate level.
