my new strafes should be out soon (much harder and smaller pads)
:icon14: He left out some details you just need to tell beginners, because it's very hard to replicate every detail when someone shows you something, unless it's explained to you. Still a nice vid. I like it. :)

Are you holding the mouse still during the jumps (until you need to change direction)? Maybe your angles are too small or too big or you make them too slowly.

I try to. OK is this right? I do a circle jump (say in the left direction) I look left and hold left and while in the air i press jump... when i land i'm still holding left but as soon as i take off i start looking right and pressing right (about 20' to the right), press jump... so on.

Thing is i just don't have enough speed to go to really far ramps :(

No, you have to change strafe and look right just before you do the next jump. You can see that very well in that Defrag movie which is linked to twice on this page. :)

I have no problem with the cj I can hit 500 pretty ez but what I am having trouble with is I lose speed and I'm pretty sure my problem is when I snap aim to where I'm going it feels sometimes its just right (the angle) and sometimes its just way to much its rarely to little the reason i say this is on racetrack maps I can continue to gain speed at a constant rate past 2000ups I'm assuming because it feels more natural to move the mouse so far is it suppose to be like:
|=center
"=mouse location
.=space indicator

"...|
|..."
".....|
|....."
".......| etc etc etc because my gaps are much larger than that sometimes they are inconsistent but usually I lose speed on my 3rd jump

How true this comment is and I agree with it however practice makes habits so if I'm doing something wrong thats obvious I want to prevent it :-/ I have very little quake experience.But as a general rule practice doesnt make perfect, perfect practice does but nobody ever says how to perfectly practice :-) anybody willing to take a look at a q3 1.9 defrag demo and see what I'm doing wrong?

Actually, I never learned how to strafe jump. No one ever taught me, it was something I learned to do naturally. You should just practice. Just try to get going faster and faster and you will eventually start doing it as efficiently as possible. How do you think it started in the first place?

i learned from cs and quake 3 demos.

How the hell did you learn from cs?

Maybe people did it in Q2 and in Q1 there was bunny hopping? :p And it could be derived from the game code by looking at the physics part of course. But you're probably right it started by people trying to be faster. :)

In older versions of CS it was possible to strafejump (not the Q3 way but by looking in the opposite way of strafe), but it was harder than in Q2/Q3 and it was removed from the code later on.

I remember something about it... and some really unimpressive tricking videos.

Ya but just because you learned one way doesn't mean jack or say anything but you learn better with trial and error aren't you aware that the most effiecent way to learn something is learning it the most natural way for you?For me It's trial and error with knowledgable critiquing+ monkey see monkey do.
I'm not saying I want to learn without practicing because thats impossible, I just want to learn what I SHOULD practice differantly than I do now.

It's just a matter of motivation. If you want to increase your skills you need the patience to do certain things over and over again, but i can tell you it's much less frustrating if you can do it with someone who can give you some feedback.

Ya I totally agree, which is why I would greatly appreciate somebody to check out a demo or something of mine to give me some feedback,I practice regardless of help or not but that doesn't mean I couldnt practice better with help, in this case pointing out the flaws.

You can send me a defrag demo if you want. The most recent version is 1.9108 btw. ;) No longer a beta and replaces your 1.9 directory.

Nice map there Runningman. :icon14: However, I cant eaven make it to that first platform :confused:
I can do strafejumping up to 700 (not quite alot i guess?) of speed but I dont know if I have ever done a CJ.
I look 45 degrees (should it be 90?) to the left (for example) of my landing spot on the next platform. I press forward and then i press right-strafe and swings my mouse to the right at the same time. When my aim is at 0 degrees (aiming towards my landingspot) i jump and continue to hold right-strafe and continue to turn my aim a bit to the right.
I guess I'm wrong? Any comments are wellcome! :)

Read my explanation on the previous page. :) Be sure to learn a CJ first though, because you really need that first boost to do strafe pads.

Btw your aim is never at 0 degrees while doing strafe pads (only very briefly when you flick your mouse when changing strafe direction). It's basically a zig-zag move with the angle getting slightly wider as you gain more speed. Also don't change the angle while you're in the air between the pads; only change quickly just before the next jump (so that it's zig-zag and not a snake/s-movement).

Thanks Oeloe, I think I've got the theoretic part now :)
I've managed to do the jump on Phrantic to the LG from the 25 health, I guess that has to be a CJ right? :P
Now I just need to get a good feeling for it and keep practicing. Thanks for the tips.
