Back on topic.

DM9, balance issues.

YA + Mega != YA

YA + Mega ~= RA

Could the guy with mega get RA? Sure, but with it as it is now its still not balanced and the guy with Mega wins.

If there is a skill imbalance it doesnt matter about items, the guy with skill will dominate. If there isnt any item control it just comes down to taking less hits, making for a more campy game. :tear:

Yes, I just got raped several times on dm9, even though I could get the dude to 50h over and over, the fact that he had 2 items to my one, with the only armour being 2 YA is an imbalance. :icon26:

Some more opinions on map design. :icon26:

rgoer, are you going to let us know what you think? Strictly as a player, not as a dev, or maybe as a dev also since the two are probably quite linked...

rgoer:

A map which ignores map control (Or other aspects of gameplay) to make it more "friendly" and "fun" in a game like Quake in fact does the opposite (And I am surprised id havn't worked this out themselves).

Take a look at base Lost Fleet. You have 1x YA 1x Rail 1x Shaft, now for a skilled played this is all they need to spawn rape over and over any below average player (And in fact scores are usually higher than "control" maps, look at the scores of top players on pt4 against newbies from Quakecon, there is a fox game where he wins like 80-1).

Now I don't know about you but that dosn't seem very friendly/fun to me whereas a map with more armour/health/space (Not long open corridors) will allow the new player to actually move about pick up different items (Like armour!)

In a newbie vs newbie game they will probably like the map which allows them to have long varied battles (Not rail vs rail over and over).

Conclusion: "control" maps are better for everyone as skilled players can play each other and have a great match, newbies can play against each other and have a great match and when a skilled player plays a newbie it won't result in a total feeling of "this game sucks" (They will still lose badly but nothing like how they would lose on say Lost Fleet).

Please try and convince id they have it all wrong ;)

Ok, let it be that stock maps are n00b friendly (I don't see railwhoring and spawn raping as a n00b friendly though). But those bonus pack really could be more "pro", like the maps for Q3 that came with one of the patches (pro-q3dm6, etc.).Funny thing that after all people play almost only them.
