Well you see,[xeno]Julios wrote:what really disturbs me about this whole gangsta ethos is the behavioural models it offers to people.
If you immerse yourself enough in this genre, and you have an adoration or respect for its heroes, it seems likely that you'll start to behave in a similar manner (especially for kids).
For example, if you get into an argument with someone, you may start using the same verbal and body language as you see your heroes using - call it a cognitive script which you adopt.
If that doesn't resolve the argument, you may resort to punches or worse.
just a hypothesis based on my own observations, reflections, and understanding of cognitive science.
This movement is completelly different from club-rap or radio entertainment you hear. In fact, hip hop was created as a way to keep kids off the street and lower local neighborhood crime. MCing competitions began to replace street fights, etc.Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began among African American communities in the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn boroughs of New York City in the early 1970s. Portions of the culture began spreading into the mainstream during the early 1980s, and by the 1990s, hip hop culture had spread all over the world. The movement is said to have begun with the work of DJ Kool Herc, while competing DJ Afrika Bambaataa is often credited with having invented the term "hip hop" to describe the culture.
The four main aspects, or "elements", of hip hop culture are MCing (rapping), DJing, graffiti, and b-boying (known to the mainstream as breakdancing). Most consider knowledge or droppin' science as the fifth element while some consider beatboxing. Others might add political activism, hip hop fashion, hip hop slang, double dutching (an urban form of rope skipping), or other elements as important facets of hip hop. In mainstream spheres, the term "hip hop" typically refers only to hip hop music (or rap music), the music produced by the MCing and DJing aspects of hip hop culture.
Originating from socially marginalized groups, the hip hop culture is spontaneously nonconformist in relation to the western system of values and esthetics.
50 Cent and other radio/club rap is designed to just be silly and "fun". Something to go dance to and not pay much attention to. JUST LIKE ALL OTHER RADIO.
That the average rap fan listens to 50 Cent and Mike Jones as opposed to a superior Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, De la Soul, MF Doom, Blackalicious, or GZA is a completelly different problem.
There are hundreds of hip hop artists that present a positive message with lyrical style and artistic integrity. Don't judge a whole realm of music purely on what you hear on the radio.
The actions of the few taint the image of the masses.

Also, American blacks have a pathetic "culture" as a result of history. Not choice.
Recall that the USA is still quite a racist country, and that most blacks are here as a result of slave trade ~200 years ago.
The lack of a cultural identity makes the black masses struggle for uniqueness. This is also the same reason why blacks prefer Africanized names or Ebonics influenced spellings.
I agree that BET and shows like Girlfriends are bad for the black image in general, but then again, most TV is bad for all images.

I call bullshit. No one forces anyone to adopt any given mannerism or attitude. Don't play into this garbage liberal copout. Yes, there's still plenty of racism in the US, and lots of it is directed towards white people. Everyone's accountable for their own actions, so if you worship Fitty Cent and bust caps in people while wearing you bling bling and your pants below your ass, it's your own damn choice.duffman91 wrote:Also, American blacks have a pathetic "culture" as a result of history. I'm aware that there is tonnes of great hiphop out there.
You're right. Unfortunately, most people are dumb and will do whatever they see on T.V..Nightshade wrote:I call bullshit. No one forces anyone to adopt any given mannerism or attitude. I'm sure you remember the news of a number of kids dying while trying Jackass style stunts.

Yes, I do. I'm well aware of the fact that stupidity is no respecter of color or nationality. I'm simply trying to ensure that we don't buy into the popular American "Oh it's not my fault, it's society's fault" crap.
After all, you don't see people making statements like "Southern Americans are racist because of their history" because that's utterly ludicrous. Yet, similar statements are applied to blacks all the time, which is terribly condescending and racist.
