bruce arena is actually good...he did a good job in moving the US team into decent competitors.

the betting houses are saying the favourite to be the new coach is jose mourinho.

I guess having the most expensive league in the world doesn't really promote homegrown talent.

there's a big thing about this in english football at the moment. worries about no talent coming up through the ranks now etc. also, too many fucking egos in the english team.

I've become increasingly disgusted at the world of clubs in the last couple of years. Clubs are slowly destroying the sport if you ask me.... because what are you cheering for if you are cheering for a club these days? You're cheering for the company that sponsors the team and whose money buys the players. Of whom maybe an avarage of two are actually from the city where the club is in, the rest is from other countries. It's like cheering for money, may the ones with the most of it win.

You can really see the effects of it reflected in national league football. Why the hell would you as a kid try your best to be part of the selection of your club? They're just gonna buy some Italian professional for a ludicrous amount of money anyway, it's not even worth the bother.

why the hell would you try your best to be part of an elite researching team at harvard? they're just gonna buy some german or indian super genius anyway, its not even worth the bother.

they should bring in a salary cap, works over here for NRL and AFL.
salary cap= each club is allowed to spend A$4 million a year on players, no one club can buy and pay all the best players, resulting in an even spread of talent across the league, and the clubs get a discount for home grown talent, which encourages kids and teams bring on the young players.
(talking about NRL here)

i dont like how teams can field as many foreign players as they want (for any league), but now that the european trade agreements demand it, i guess its the way its got to be.

i agree with arsene wenger:

"I have only been here since 1996 but between 1966 and 1996 you [England] had 30 years without foreign players and you didn't win any more competitions in that time," Wenger said.

"You have done much better since 1996 in the major tournaments, when sometimes you were unlucky.

"If you are in a better class you improve quicker and you shouldn't put the criteria just down to producing local players.

"You have to put them up to the level of Thierry Henry and take [the number of quality players coming in from abroad] as a chance to produce better English players.

"I understand the worries, but it's not always as logical as it seems. "

That's not a bad analogy - except when you don't make it to the elite team or the semi elite team of researchers, it still matters because, shit, it's harvard. But when you don't make the first or second team in football, you might as well not play. Unless your ambition is to be sold to Farmers United for two cows and a rake.
