Just trying to say, what intelligent being believes that Mayan calanders, biblical notations, or speaches by Jim Jones happen to contain such things. Someone who sees the written works as nothing more than mythological allegories, which hide the truth. An 'intelligent being' doesn't take biblical notations or speeches by jim jones at face value because they know they are symbolic of something else.

I see what you're saying. It's hard not to assume that people are being literal. In my experience, there are few people who try to read between the lines. I am interested in any true indicators of possible events that would impact Humanity on a large scale. Is that what you are pointing at?

Yeah, I know. It can be seen through contemporary sources well enough. It's obvious if you just look around. The mass event coming to us is likely to be by poison or virus. I don't see how anyone can predict a date for that. Now if the Maya left a note that said "some time in the next century or two...", I might dig a bit deeper into their calendar. In mere historical inquiries, I haven't seen anything to suggest that I should be worried about 2012.

it's the end of a katun or a baktun or something like that.

it'd be a big party for the start of the new count, not the end of the world. if the mayan civilisation was still around now and survived till christmas 2012 - they might book the next day off work but they wouldn't put off starting to read a novel or anything.
