The Coalition of Freedom only engages in open conflict with nations that have no way to defend themselves

The F-16 looks way better IMO. It's really sleek and aerodynamic looking. The F-35 looks really bulky and like a brick

That argument is two-fold: it can be used in the "there's no need for such weaponry" way, but I also wonder if dogfights are actually still a thing? I mean, don't they stealthily come in and shoot down other planes (or indeed, whatever target) from a 15km distance these days?

Seremtan is correct, dogfighting seems to be a thing of the past. Not so much because of the distance and stealth i'd say, it's more because you'd have to be absolutely stupid to send guys in planes to fight guys in planes these days - any sensible person would use drones for that sort of thing. More cost effective and all that.

i'd have thought SAMs would have been more of a threat than dogfights (or having your planes destroyed on the ground)

Drones are not capable of this yet.

Dogfights are not a thing of the past... Fucking idiots...

U morons realize the doomsday clock has been moved up to the 2nd highest it's ever been... The US has moved troops to eastern Europe, Russian troops massing in western Russia. Etc Russians openly assume the cold war has reopened. Their T50, SU29 and even mig29 can shoot that jsf pos out of the sky easily... Grow up chumps...

The cold war Mi/G and SU fighters always looked so cool. Not great performers, but very awesome looking. Love the SU-27.

The Tuplov transport jets are very cool as well

But i believe they are... maybe nobody tried putting drones in this role yet (as far as we know) but the technology has been there for years.

Lockheed Martin responds:
The author of the Lockheed Martin/JPO response wrote that the War is Boring post "does not tell the entire story. The F-35 involved was AF-2 [the second F-35 airframe]...designed for flight sciences testing of the aircraft. It is not equipped with a number of items that make today's production F-35s 5th Generation fighters."

The tests that the report was based on were intended "to test the flying qualities of the F-35 using visual combat maneuvers to stress the system, and the F-16 involved was used as a visual reference to maneuver against," the response said. "While the dogfighting scenario was successful in showing the ability of the F-35 to maneuver to the edge of its limits without exceeding them and handle in a positive and predictable manner, the interpretation of the scenario results could be misleading."
As for whether or not dogfights are still a thing, Lockheed Martin states that dogfights are, as far as the F-35 is concerned, not a thing anymore:
But that's all fine because as the spokesperson noted, the F-35 isn't supposed to get into within-visual-range dogfights to begin with. "The F-35's technology is designed to engage, shoot, and kill its enemy from long distances, not necessarily in visual 'dogfighting' situations," the spokesperson wrote. And in four-on-four mock battles between F-35s and F-16s, "the F-35s won each of those encounters because of its sensors, weapons, and stealth technology."

:)

Wether dogfighting is a thing of tht past I dunno, need to remember that a lot of modern fighters have counter measures to stop it getting downed before it engages though

Don't think drones can match a plane either, not yet anyway.

What's stopping anyone from building an F-16 or something like that and putting a remote control on it?
