For me PC gaming does not translate into making sure my hardware is at peak performance. I've never done stuff like that, i have zero interest in it & it gets on my nerves to even consider such neurotic behaviour. Pretty much i pop in a game and go... and when after a few years new games are unplayable, i simply buy a new comp.
Admittedly this has lead to a collection of working but unused PC's cluttered around my house, but some day i'm sure to find a purpose for them. One must remain an optimist.
Can't stand consoles, all the types of games i like suck on those infernal devices.

The last PC game I played was Half-Life 2 episode 2 and it took me a goddamn hour before it would run because I actually need to downgrade my videocard drivers.
I've never have this problem, unless it's because I've downloaded a game and the crack is fucked. Like Ryoki I spend a few hundred quid every couple of years or so and upgrade my hardware when games become unplayable, which is something I would probably do anyway to keep my computer running software quickly. I have no interest in over clocking or messing about with putting water in my case. Every six months or so I remember to download video drivers. I don't spend much time playing games anymore, but when I do have the time and inclination, the games i value enough to give my time are usually are those that have been playtested and polished enough to not need you to fag around with your pc to get it working. The only thing that takes a little longer than the is the installation. Once the game is running it looks sexier and runs smoother than the console equivilent

Platform snobbery is idiocy.
Each has advantages and disadvantages.
PCs still have games that simply couldn't be done on a console, such as Dwarf Fortress.
However, I will say that keeping up with the technology curve is becoming less important to me as I get older, and convenience is becoming more attractive, especially after the nightmare I've had with PCs over the past 3 months.

For me, attempting to play FPS games on consoles is a horrid, horrid experience. I struggle to aim with the two thumbsticks and it frustrates me. Mouse/keyboard is so much smoother, more intuitive, more accurate, better in every possible way. So I still maintain my PC just to play FPS games. And MMOs I guess.
Console games have their own place. The convenience is nice, but I favor consoles for the type of games that work better on them. Fighters, racing games, beat em ups, platformers and the like. Multiplayer games especially, you don't want to huddle in front of a computer screen with friends, it's much funner in a comfortable lounge with a larger screen. And of course, the exclusives that you don't get on the PC.
I used to be a PC snob when I was younger and dumber, but I agree with Mat that platform snobbery is silly.

I hated FPS games on consoles as well, but I've played dozens of great FPS games on GameCube, Wii and XBox 360. It's just a matter of getting used to.
Yes, the mouse/keyboard combo is always superior, but it's fanboyism when ranting about controlling FPS games with a controller. Besides, the opposite could be said about playing racing games with a just a keyboard.

You can use a keyboard and mouse with UT on the PS3. I'm willing to bet most games don't support it because the majority of people wouldn't use it.
Also, scared?s experience with consoles is limited to the Wii.

if the last console that you owned beside a Wii was a playstation 1 then i can see why your opinion is fucked up. Get back to us when you get a next gen console thats has decent software and on-line capabilities.

Also if you get your son a 360 do him a favor and replace your 30yr old TV also. Or at least get him a HD lcd monitor to play on. Ive heard complaints about text being shitty on recent games in SD. You wouldn't expect him to play COD4 @ 640x480 on your pc would you?

I can vouch for that. I visited relatives a few weeks back and my cousin was playing Bioshock on an SD set. The subtitles were pointless.
