I knocked out some more cuts all the major wood is done and nailed in place, the mantle shelf is still loose since we are trying to decide how far we want it to stick out. I'm picking up some moldings tonight and that should help us decide. I think where it is now is perfect.

All that is left is the finishing touches
  • Moldings
  • sanding
  • wood putty
  • move up smaller TV :(
  • build wall behind TV and mount speakers
  • Paint

Things seem to be going well. I'm looking forward to the finished product. However, those lights look like they may wash out the screen.

you're meant to have a low ambient light behind a backlit screen, gramps. it helps you appreciate the customer depth. i'm sure they are on a dimmer.

The lights are in front of the TV now, I put up a shallow mount and a smaller TV. But the lights are set to dim when the DVR or media center macro is run.

Once again this is not our main viewing room, it our living room. most of the TV watching will be done downstairs when I star that project in a few weeks...

I switched out the TV and mount today, My old TV seems so small compared to the one we took down. Most of the finishing touches are up, all the moldings have been installed, all I have left to do is install the wall behind the TV mount the speakers, putty and paint.

Looking good man. I'm still not a big fan of the TV above the fire place. However, you've got excellent wood working skills. Is this your design or are you following some kind of generic instructions?

Still anxious to see the final product.

you seem to put the extra time to do good work... I'm sure it will look flawless when you're done...I like to do my own work as well, and I take pride on getting everything just right, even though it takes me prolly more than twice as long to do...can't pay for work like that these days

The photo I posted on the first page of this thread, I found it a few years ago while searching for fireplace surround ideas. Aside from the cool modern ones that do not fit the design of my house, this was the only one I really liked. It's my own design, just built to look like the photo.

Getting closer to completion, I was able to frame out the TV and speakers and get the wall up :toothy: I don't think I will be done my Thursday though :/

It's hard to get people to take pride in their job, so I agree it's better to do it yourself then pay 4 times for something you will not be happy with. My goal is to use a small portion of the money I save to buy the tools for the job. It is satisfying to complete a big project like this with the help of my wife

I totaled up the cost for this project. It cost just under $600.00 for the materials. Including:
  • Masonry
  • extra slate (to mix in with the free slate)
  • plywood
  • electrical (lighting)
  • trim and support wood
  • paint and putty
  • TV mount

Funny story I went into the hardware store to buy a can of black paint. They guys says "what color black?" I say "you know Black... Black" Long story short after staring at 30 possibilities I settled on Cannonball Black.

I had to sand off all the compound so I took some tips from Dexter :D

I painted behind the TV Flat Black or cannonball black just to make it blend in.

I painted the sub wall to match the existing walls in the room

Now on to priming and painting the wood

I ran the fire on full for 6 hours one night (TV off), the temperature at the TV was the same as the ambient room temp. I found it strange, but it does not appear to be an issue. However now that there are Halogens in the overhang the temp with the fire off is 5 - 7 degrees higher by the TV :ducky:

Why did you paint the wall behind the TV black?

Make what blend in? You can't really blend the TV into the wall or vice versa.

I was looking for a better explanation, Daft.

why didn't you ask for a better explanation instead of asking a question that he already answered? oh right, it's because you're fucking dumb and can't read.

When it was primed white it just didn't look right, I felt making it black would soften the edges of the recess the TV sat in. Painting it black also hides the wires if someone were to walk up and look down the side of the TV :D

It also looks like you have a lot of wires running to your TV. The only thing you should really need at the TV is an HDMI cable, a power outlet and maybe some type of cable wire. Everything else could be wired through your receiver.
