Ok, I'm probably gonna end up buying this game sometime this week. But I have q confession, I never played Starcraft. Will I be slaughtered playing this (dumb question to ask here) if I'm not experienced? Or can this be picked up fairly quickly? Also, my time is limited in the evenings, as I have other things to do and I don't want to be a shut-in SC2 loser. So how long does a typical match take?

There is a fairly complex ladder system in place, with 5 "skill" levels. Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond. You can practice all you want, and then you play 5 placement matches. Depending on how well you do, and what your opponent is rated, it will place you in one of those brackets. It's possible you will just have bad luck and go up against 5 people above your skill level, and also possible you'll destroy some people who don't know what they're doing, so the initial placement is sometimes off (it put me in bronze in 1v1, and platinum for 2v2 and 3v3). Eventually it will level out, as I'm not almost into Gold in 1v1.
I think the matchmaking borrows a lot from WoW's arena system. And while you either love or hate that game, one thing it has refined is matching evenly skilled opponents.

I've never been strong at RTS games because I don't bother learning how to min/max or figure out strategies. However, I can attest to the fact that so far the single player alone is worth the price of admission and anyone could beat the missions on the easiest setting.

That's true as well. The SP is a lot of fun, and there's quite a large variety to the missions. I wasn't happy with the idea of the game being split into 3 parts (Protoss and Zerg expansions coming), but this is some quality stuff.

On single player, why are certain tech upgrades (in the ship's armory) disabled after completing the first Zeratul mission?

If anyone hasn't played the original Starcraft, the Battle Chest is now only $9.99 at amazon. That's half price of anywhere else.

too bad thats not the 'real' battlechest tho.
that is, they bundled SC with BW and called it the Battle Chest, while way back then the Battle Chest was an actual chest with both games, and art book and some other awesome stuffs

Just finished the single player campaign, how good is it eh? Such high production quality, great missions, brilliant cutscenes and voice acting. Really looking forward to the Zerg and Protoss games now. It does complete justice to the original. Good stuff.

havent completed it yet, but really?
i dont like the cutscenes actually, it feels very wooden. mostly because they use stock animations for dialogues.
I also dont get the point of wandering around on the ship clicking everything; your basically going through the same routine between every mission, in hopes of maybe getting a new sentence or two from some shipmate.
another thing i dont like is that you *are* Jim Raynor instead of just a commander how happens to get caught up in all kinds of shit including Raynor's. but that might be just me.
BUT. when the missions start, this game is top notch. oldskool starcrafting in a new engine

pissed we have to wait at least 2 years for the zerg campaign or 4 for the protoss

How far have you gotten? I don't want to spoil anything but I'm not talking about the ship segements but the actual cut scenes as seen in the archive panel. The ones with Zeratul and later Kerrigan [including Mengsk's betrayal] are especially good.

oh ok FMVs. yes those are Blizzard Standard Awesome™
btw just exposed Mengks via the tv studios. and one Zeratul mission (awesome).
