this is true for like 90% of the households here.. and I should know cause i used to hook up cable and phone lines.

they simply don't care how something looks as long as it's functional and cheap. Not to mention that franchising everything means that your selection options in huge stores are all pretty much regurgitated variations of the same cheap easily manufactured garbage. One needs to go the extra step and spend alot of money to even attempt to do things in a different way.

for instance I was looking for some tiles to finish my main bathroom and out of the 200 options in the home depot (which were all effectively 200 variations of the color beige) I found none that I liked. ended up having to pay like 15 dollars per square foot from a specialized store that had to ship my shit from italy. Pretty much every time I need to get something for the house, I prepare myself for disappointment, and a long expensive search.
