The Director of National Intelligence, who oversees the nation's intelligence agencies, admits in a letter to Senator Ron Wyden that on "at least one occasion" the FISA court found that “minimization procedures” used by the government while conducting surveillance under FISA was “unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment.”

no wonder America's forgotten about that little thing involving the NSA wiretapping your every communication and moved on to Kim Kardashian's latest bullshit... you're ok with a stalker app using GPS to track your location ffs :disgust:

OK, I guess this sort of response is expected from the resident luddite, but seriously. This and similar features have been in phones for years, and permissions for GPS access to apps like this is entirely under user control. In return, you get arguably useful features, which some people may opt for. Personally, I disable all GPS access unless I'm using my phone for navigation.

The actual worry with phones tracking location is the automatic data gathering that your carrier does based on your position in their cell network. THAT tracking is non-consensual and intrusive and actually merits concern. The only way to avoid it is to carry your phone around in airplane mode, which is hardly productive.

My phone itself could be tracked by the government just by being powered on. Who the fuck cares if I tell Apple App Store I'm standing in a Starbucks when I just used the online navigation to get there? You have to authorize every app, every time it wants to check your location.

A phone can be tracked (and the mic can be remotely turned into a listening device) even if it's switched off - as long as the battery is in there.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/06/14/n ... disasters/
Since the 2008 economic crash, security agencies have increasingly spied on political activists, especially environmental groups, on behalf of corporate interests. This activity is linked to the last decade of US defence planning, which has been increasingly concerned by the risk of civil unrest at home triggered by catastrophic events linked to climate change, energy shocks or economic crisis – or all three.

Just last month, unilateral changes to US military laws formally granted the Pentagon extraordinary powers to intervene in a domestic “emergency” or “civil disturbance”:

“Federal military commanders have the authority, in extraordinary emergency circumstances where prior authorization by the President is impossible and duly constituted local authorities are unable to control the situation, to engage temporarily in activities that are necessary to quell large-scale, unexpected civil disturbances.”

Other documents show that the “extraordinary emergencies” the Pentagon is worried about include a range of environmental and related disasters.

really? you think i'm mad at phones because they're trying to take my job? interesting... or possibly just a historically illiterate use of the term 'Luddite'

Herp de derp?

In modern usage, "Luddite" is a term describing those opposed to industrialisation, automation, computerisation or new technologies in general.

That's not what I said. You're a luddite because of comments like this:
seremtan wrote:my favourite app is Phone, which allows you to speak to other people who also have Phone installed, so long as you have their number

it's pretty cool
And generally negative things to say in technology / phone threads from what I've observed over the past few years. Having established the fact that you are a luddite, it is expected of you to make uninformed and silly comments like the one you made to bitWISE earlier in this thread.

If you don't want to get tracked by the government or corporations, you'd better stop carrying around any kind of mobile telephony device at all.

wow, someone pissed in your cornflakes this morning. obvious phone thread troll is obvious - except to you. maybe you can find an app that'll help you recognise when someone's rustling your jimmies

i bet you're one of those people who heard Zuckerberg describing the upcoming Facebook phone as a "social media platform" and thought "yes! finally someone speaking my language!" - instead of laughing your ass off like everyone else

Not really? I am conscious about online privacy and don't use social media sites like Facebook.

What irked me about your previous comment was how you were twisting a fairly benign tech feature into taking jabs at Americans for being E! obsessed shallow morons instead of caring about more important things. But you seem to have completely sidestepped the fact that it was a ridiculous point to have made, and turned this into an argument about the meaning of "luddite". So, congrats on the deflection I guess. Good strategy, that's probably what I'd do too if I were a technophobic luddite.

"E!" is some entertainment channel in America. Think it's on pay TV in the UK in some packages. U4EA is in Australia though, but maybe he has it.

Have you seen the Australian version of Grand Designs? It's like they didn't get the part about it being special architechture.

I better post something on topic now:

The good news is:
you're not paranoid;
the bad news is:
they actually are spying on everyone.
