Wow, quite unexpected. It's just the start though. Still 6 matches to win before the finale.

I think Van Persie's header goal could be a contender for goal of the whole tournament, it was amazing.
On that performance, the dutch might be lifting the cup. ;)

reminded me of the time England beat Germany 5-1 in qualifying and went on to win the 2002 World Cup. i fully expect Netherlands to repeat that glorious result...

- Great performance by the dutch.

It reminds me a bit of their early performance in Euro 2008 where they crushed defending world champions Italy 3-0 and world cup runners up France 4-1. The thing is those games were a bit deceptive in that the scorelines were flattering...many of the goals resulting in counterattacks as opposed to just the dutch bossing the game. The dutch then were outclassed by the russians in the next round.

Still, great win for the dutch.

- I didn't understand the spanish line-up. They played three playmakers behind the striker, costa. If one of those playmakers were attacking midfielders that are the type to crash the goal when necessary, it would make more sense to me. If costa received, or were to receive, a ball in a non-shooting position, i don't know who would have made that darting run to the far/near post for him. pedro instead of xavi or silva would have been better. he would have also have given them some width. i would also have liked to see david villa in there at some point.

- It's silly that this game even happened really. It was the first time there was a rematch of the previous world cup final in the group stage. The reason is because FIFA changed their seeding rules. Before, your previous performance in the world cups determined your seeding. The Netherlands should have been seeded in this tournament. They were runners up last time! Now FIFA does seeding based on coca cola rankings...and you have ridiculous things like having switzerland seeded and not the dutch.

Oh and what a sad bunch of cunts those Brazilians are for boo-ing Costa every time he touched the ball. The man plays for Spain. Let him. It's not like he can still change his mind.

Only with England could our physio, a guy not even playing, end up needing to get get stretchered off.

I missed how he got injured, looked painful afterwards though.

decent game, and England didn't look too bad, but predictable result. gg Sturridge

p.s. Rooney (with the exception of the assist) and Gerrard looked past their sell-by date, frankly

Dislocated ankle apparently, not sure how it happened though.
I wish someone had dislocated Phil Neville's jaw to stop the monotone commentary.

Rooney's wonderful corner kick. :olo:

Think they claimed it was the boggy pitch. You know he's never going to be allowed to forget it though.

I'm not really a football fan but Rooney always seems rubbish whenever I've seen him play, why all the hype .

because English pundits and fans always hype the guy who scored that one really good goal way back in the day. it helps them to ignore the dearth of talent elsewhere in the squad

England will draw against Uruguay and Costa Rica, in spite of not playing that badly. There'll be lessons to learned, positives to take home, opportunities to build on blah blah blah, but no one will be disappointed because it's what everyone expects
