Baldur's gate was awesome... it's no Lunar, but it's up there

Baldur's Gate 2 was the best.

I wish they'd make another infinity engine game.

Chrono Trigger was good--but there are other titles in the Square library that beat it... FFVI, Vagrant Story, FF:Tactics (while not a pure rpg, I found the rpg elements--the plot--to be quite engaging)

None of these really compare to a Lunar game, though, when it comes to being the best rpg period

Either that or Dungeon Master.
Replaying Dungeon Master II right now. :icon14:

As for my all time favorite, Planescape: Torment.

I didn't ever consider Zelda to be an RPG, but if that's the case I'll add it to my list... Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time.

Also...*cough* Secret of Mana. :paranoid:

Baldur's Gate, or anything Bioware has done (Neverwinter, Kotor, Jade Empire...)

I can't see how someone would even think of great and associate it with diablo. That game was shit in my opinion and I did play it. It just stopped being fun doing the same thing over and over again just to get new items. It feels like dressup dolls or something
Try playing a game religously for 4 years straight...It was and always will be my favorite game.

The problem that most people have is they never learned how to play properly. I could understand where single player or open multiplayer would get boring. The real fun came when you played on the many variations of closed bnet. Having a successful bnet account was like running a community. First you had to create a character that was tough as nails. While you played with that character you kept an eye out for good items and just kept on building new characters. At the very minimum you would need a good PvP char, a good PvM char, and a good mf char (for finding items). With 8 character classes and atleast 2 strong builds available for each class you had atleast 16 characters you could build. Not to mention you could step into hardcore mode (after you die your character is deleted), ladder mode (start from scratch and compete to be the best before the end of the season), or do any number of other little things. There is an entire industry based in magicfind and at one point there was a group who's sole purpose to hunt down the diablo clone (hardest monster in the game) across the bnet servers. I could keep going but I doubt anyone would keep reading.

Your character didn't get deleted if you died on Hardcore. You just couldn't enter a game with them. They were still in the lineup for bragging rights.

w3rd. Secret of Mana is great. Great story, great visuals, 3 player mode, and the music was up there with some of the best I've heard in a video game.

DnD? :D

baldurs gate series had me in its clutches for hours on end. still does actually.

FF7 is just marvelous, although not much roleplaying, it counts as an RPG. its so lovingly depressing :icon14: :D

for the oldskoolers: Dungeon Master was the dogs danglies- still is. GREAT 3d (sprites) rpg. got me scared stiff on some points. it lacks a few UI functions though.

oh and Might&Magic3. kinda like dungeon master but 10 times bigger. fuck that game rocks

dungeon master 2 didnt do it for me. the first one had that feeling of isolation, like the party really didnt have any choice but to push through, while the second introduced npcs and stores n whatnot.

Morrowind, not least because for once it didn't have a retarded experience system in which practising your bowling makes you better at flying an F-15

VAGRANT STORY!?
MOTHERFUCK!?
i will grant you an arguement on the other two but VAGRANT FUCKING STORY!?

it had lots of elements of a good game sure, but they were all implemented poorly, from the weapon creation, to the battle system (RISK system was kind of dumb), no real feelings develop for the characters besides sydney who was quite badass i'll admit.

Chrono Trigger was the pinnacle of pixel RPGs, Square's ultimate achievement before FF7 (which would be better than Chrono Trigger if only it had "New Game +")
The dream is dead.
