I'm considering this as my next camera - I'm going to give photography a go semi-professionally. I have a few local professional wedding guys I am going to be working with on sort of an apprentice/secondary photographer basis whenever I can, and once I feel ready I am going to add weddings to the list of services I am offering for my business. I'd like to have a true professional level (full frame) camera at that point. 5DmkII is great and something I've wanted for a long time, but I really like the potential for 10 FPS with the 1D series and the weather sealed body.
If I weren't planning on pursuing this as a potential second career there's no way I'd consider dropping that much money on a camera. It's not out until December though and I don't plan on buying anything for at least 6 months anyhow, but it's definitely something I'm thinking about.
Isn't that still a 1.3x crop body? If you were only into shooting sports, I could understand. But it seems like you may, with what you shoot, want a quality wide angle lens for your body at some point in time.
I just can't see dumping $5k into a cropped body unless I absolutely never, ever wanted to shoot wide angle shots.
Anyways, I picked up my 1Ds MK II and have so far been very happy. The body feels great, the controls are awesome and well, it's full frame. Just got my new tripod set up as well, now onto getting a small lighting set up going to start playing with portraits this winter.
Not exactly an amazing shot, but it was funny and came from my first test run with my new tripod (Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 legs I got used and BH-55 ballhead from RRS with lever based quick release). I've only ever owned really crappy tripods before, I never thought I'd actively want to use my tripod until setting this up

That's not really the ideal body for portrait work, it's more for capturing live action. It's only 16mp, which is only 1000 pixels larger than the 50D, which is the bare minimum for print format

The thing that drew me to it was the freedom to do action work as well as portraiture - I do a lot of wildlife stuff in the spring and summer and really was impressed with the 1d mk III's performance with that.
If I can find a 1Ds mk III for around that price before the IV comes out I might go that way instead - I don't have any commitments to buy until it ships, but if I decide this is really what I want, I've got access to it.

I'm happy enough with the width I can get at 10 to 12mm on a 1.6x body, so 1.3x isn't the big issue for me. This camera gives me the FPS I wanted for action shots - birds, sports, etc. I have that same tripod, btw, and love it - but I didn't get the ball head release, I got the tri-grip one that has the huge baseplate. It's a nice, relatively inexpensive tripod that gives you decent stability. Someday I may go carbon fiber if I get tired of hauling it around.
Also, and I normally wouldn't buy a camera for the video functionality, but the 1080p video capacity (or 60 fps at 720p) will be quite useful at times - especially events.
The 5D hasn't done anything special there, man, you could've taken that shot with a 350D and not been able to tell the difference at that size. There's so much work on it that it's almost impossible to judge it objectively...
Even if it didn't there, my point about the camera is that it does - I was looking at images from it last night for a long time vs. 40D and 50D images - and when you find the right full res images, there is some quality about the images that just isn't there even in a top notch 40 or 50D shot.
I think you're going to be really disappointed if you get one yourself in that case, man..
Mostly the reason why 5DII shots look better is because they are generally used by better photographers with better lenses and higher PP skill.
Straight out of a camera in good light, at ISO100, cropped to equal sizes, I challenge anyone to tell the difference between a 40D and a 5D2 shot.
I have a 50D and a 5D2, and in lightroom, the only reason I know what camera took what picture is by looking at the EXIF. There's just absolutely no way of telling otherwise.
The DOF on a full frame body is also smaller, which may account for the smoothness you talk of, but cropped at 100%, you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two cameras on their best settings...
Did some desaturating, sharpening to give it some texture, etc. The tiny border you see around the edge is from me undoing the frame I had put on another version before shrinking it down to make this one. Not on the final full size version though.
wow thats an amazing image. i think that's a perfect example of how post processing can really enhance the mood of photograph and turn something unremarkable in nature to something exciting to look at.
