You bet, you're right about marketing. I have a lack of marketing ability myself. While I still earn a living, I could earn a lot more if I was pushing myself out there more. Luckily, my partner is a relentless promotor for me so it balances out. You can have all the skill in the world, but if all you do is upload pictures to flickr, you aren't going anywhere. Marketing cuts into my time to the point where it feels like it's 80% of what I do. Yesterday I spent half of my evening emailing magazines a private gallery I'd created.

That being said, marketing does pay off. This morning I got told I won a national competition I entered earlier this year, and I'm going to be published in a landscape photographers book. Hopefully that should push my print sales up a bit.

Those are the only two lenses I've got, if I need any others, I just rent them. I love the 70-200 f2.8 for some portraiture and event photography, and the 85L 1.2 gives the most surreal pictures. It's probably my favourite lens, but it's too expensive to buy, and only costs pennies to rent for a week.

I spend all of my money on light control rather than lenses. I have ring flashes, soft boxes, strip lights, triflectors, full size reflectors, snoots, grids, beauty dishes, pretty much everything.

Unfortunately lens rentals around here suck - there is only one shop in the city that rents lenses and they only have a couple - both of which I own (100-400L and 24-70 F2.8).

I've got 2 Alienbee B800 flashes, a 48 inch octabox, shoot through and reflective umbrellas, 3 hotshoe flashes (2 exclusively for off-camera use), backdrop stands, reflectors, and a few muslin backdrops.
what sorts of situations call for strip lights over softboxes?

Just when you want a thinner spread of light. It's easier to create a soft light with a sharp falloff when you're using a strip light

We dug up 228, 30 year old low level aircraft photos covering a 7km by 2.5km area on a Gold project in a desert in Namibia.
each images overlaps into the other images beside,below and above.
The chief geologist asked if i could do anything with these images and i said i would give it a shot.
I had one of the junior geologists scan each one but she did not scan them straight "TIA" this is Africa.
There are 228 images roughly 45 megabytes each.i cropped, resized ,staightened and color/brightness corrected each one because of the sun and the fading of the 30 year old photographs.
I minimized as much as i could the overlaps so i could minimize the Fisheye effect.

The hard part was the 3 week trial and error process trying to minimize the overlap but yet keep the accuracy of what
the air photo and what is on the ground true and completly accurate.
in other words once i geo-reference the final airphoto i should be able to click my mouse on the image on lets say a gold trench that is visible on the final photo using Geosoft Oasis Montaj, get the gps co-ordinate and then on using my handheld gps i should be able to get to the trench.

I was able to get the Geo-referenced image to match what is on the ground with great accuracy.
Using this final image i was able to remove from our budget a new Airial photo survey costing a shit load of money,find trenches that we never knew existed and use this image to overlay my ground Geophysics on top of.
It was a fun exercise and i learned a lot and the image has proven to be of great use to our geologists.

Are these types of places in densely populated areas, or are they solitary buildings on big plots of land? Also, are they usually boarded up/locked up to keep people out?

It really depends. This particular place was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by acres of land. The day after, though, I went to shoot a victorian disused water pumping station, and that was sitting right in the middle of an existing fully staffed facility. I had to climb a back gate and then make my way past staff and workers before finding an under-building access point with a broken gate that got me into the main building. Once inside, I was only a door away from a group of employees in full view of me through all the window, and had to spend most of the explore ducking past them every time I set up a shot. At one point I was staring at a man a few feet from me as he inspected a padlock on the door for signs of entry because I'd obviously been spotted on CCTV.

Oh, I never force my way into anywhere, just incase anyone was wondering. If there's not an open window or open door, I walk away.

It was a very difficult to get it right but the end result was way worth it.

Osprey are finally back - shot some this weekend. Wish the sky wasn't covered with high clouds when I was shooting these. The AI servo mode of this camera worked extremely well at tracking birds in flight and maintaining focus.
Male kept trying to mate with the female in the nest, flying up from behind with talons out and ready to grab on, but she wouldn't have it.






Also shot a soccer game for the first time - don't have the lenses the sports photographers use but I can really see the reason they use such fast prime lenses. Unfortunately the cost of 400mm F2.8 lenses is a bit much ATM.

One from a disused victorian water pumping station I visisted recently. Fucking amazing place, crazy architecture everywhere, completely over the top.
