I am loath to jump into another couple's argument but I pretty much read this as ".. had more in them than they showed on that day" as opposed to ".. had more in them than Spain".

Although, the followup sentence did add some ambiguity:

RE: all the British support for Spain. I've always thought the Brits were crippled with xenophobia by the more downtrodden European people, i.e. the Spanish, Portuguese & Greeks [and on a whole other level, the Turks]. So I'm very surprised by this.
