Do they ever target photographers during these riots or are you pretty much only at risk of being collateral damage? Would you ever want to try your hand at battlefield photography?

They were generally fine at that event, but I was covering a Muslim protest outside the Israeli embassy last year, and I was right in the middle where they were burning flags in a circle, going fucking ape-shit. I was getting shots of them shouting and whistling, and I turned my camera on a ten year old boy who was LEADING the chants in the call for Israeli deaths, and suddenly I just had fists from all angles raining down on me. Luckily there was so many people hitting me that they all kind of cancelled each other out and I just took the shots and backed out of the crowd. I still have the pics somewhere, I'll have a quick look in a second.

At the G20 riot, it was nothing like that though. They were just attacking the police. Mainly you just had collateral injuries in the form of broken glass, and like I said before, soakings from bottles of piss that were being thrown from the crowd. I was drenched.

In piss.

Here you go:

I moved in for a closer shot after this, and that's when they all flipped out. The cameraman in front had his camera damaged; they attacked him as well.

They must have thought that anyone Caucasian was a hardcore sympathizer of the Zionist regime. Or just been a bunch of stirred up nutjobs looking for an excuse to attack someone.

Definitely the latter. It was one of the most intense atmospheres I've ever been in. It doesn't seem so in the photo, but you are completely segregated from law and order whilst in the circle. When the crowd turned nasty, the police made no effort to stop it, it was crazy.

That being said, they've kind of got a reason to be mad, so it's hard to hate them.

If we're talking violence, the Israeli army is one of the most bloodthirsty in the Middle East.

To all that submit in this topic, my hat goes off to you.

One word fits, impressive

In about a week I am doing a one day introductory amateur photographic course.
Yes I know, what could I gather in a day worth anything.
I should think it is a promotion/intro to further and more detailed, perhaps personal tuition/instruction from the teacher & organization, but I am not sure on this.

What I would like from all you photo gurus is to post a comment or two on what I should focus (pun) on and what sort of questions I should ask. I am considering further education in the photo area as a new hobby* and updating my cameras if I have any success in the course.

* So impressed by all your shots, and in need of a hobby, this looks so attractive. TIA

Learn the way that aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect exposure so you know exactly what you need to change and when you need to change it in order to get decent exposure in the conditions you are shooting in. Also maybe ask that classic question "How do I get pictures with the blurry background?" (How do you get shallow depth of field?)

My cousin's dog Dolly, taken during Christmas dinner. Bugger moves around too fast that I got a stack of blurry shots and then she licked my lens.
