The last movie you saw
Re: The last movie you saw
Hancock
Entertaining but nothing more than that. The word 'vehicle' describes it perfectly. No real development of characters or exploration of the central idea which was in itself great. Like taking one of the biggest concepts in the comic book world and compressing it forcibly into a hollywood framing.
Still, alright for killing a few hours. I won't be fishing the DVD out of a bargain bin any time soon.

Don't you mean dark knight?\
I'm seeing it again on Tuesday in IMAX. The only movies I've ever watched in theatres more than once are The Matrix, Children of Men, and something I can't even remember right now.
Re: The last movie you saw
They have a new movie coming soon called BURN AFTER READING, with their most ridiculous cast to date: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovitch, Tilda Swinton, and JK Simmons. That's so many Oscars winners ...saturn wrote:No Country for Old Men - 8.5/10
I'm very intrigued by this Coen's movie. I can't stop thinking about it. Javier Bardem has to be the creepiest, evilest, psycho-est psychopath killer ever. Props to the actor.
Re: The last movie you saw
Wanted - 7/10 - stuffed full of trademark timur bekmanbetov (sp?) sfx, and quite fun to watch even though the plot was daft and i can't stand angelina jolie and the loom thing was fucking lame

The Dark Knight - 9/10. Ledger's performance is greater than the hype makes it out to be. Unbelievable.

The Dark Knight = 9/10 - There are only a few actors that can change their voice, body motions and can really "become" the character....which means there are only a few real actors out there. Heath Ledger is one of those. I never knew it from him from his previous work...but this movie convinced me he can actually act.
"Actors" who are one-dimensional and only bring their own personality to the character aren't actors at all and should never be considered as such. Brad Pitt, Benicio Del Toro, Colin Farrell, Will Sasso, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. and a few others actually bring acting talent to each and every project. The sad thing about Hollywood is that most of the real talent (in terms of acting range) are in comedy (or rehab) so they never get the props they deserve.

Fucking amazing. Enough said.

No Country for Old Men - 8/10
Probably the darkest of all the Cohen brothers' films, but there are a few subtle glimmers of their characteristic humor to be found if you look closely. Javier Bardem as the freaky contract killer was a perfect match. Excellent cinematography, excellent acting. The story is very dark, which I guess is the trademark of Cormac McCarthy. It made me want to read the book too, plus I recently bought The Road too, which I'm very much looking forward towards reading now.
I probably need to see this film again before I give it a final rating, I'm only giving it a 8/10 now, but I reserve the possibility of changing it to 9/10 after I've seen it again.

fucking outstanding from start to finish.
movie lived up to every ounce of hype.
Ledger's joker makes Jack Nicholson's joker look like he should be standing in front of a short bus selling ice cream to fucking school children.

Gonzo: The Life and Works of Hunter S. Thompson 8.5/10
If you like HST, you'll love it. They manage to interview everyone from Pat Buchanan to Jimmy Buffett, to Gary Hart and George McGovern for this.
He was one of a kind, no doubt about it.

Re: The last movie you saw
Yea, it's more of a cinematic biography with a touch of elegy really, but it's mixed in with elements of a documentary about modern political history and journalism at the same time.
I haven't read any of the Gonzo book, but the film had all kinds of stuff in it that I'd never heard before. Like how much his poor landlord suffered for him.

It's independent, produced by Magnolia -- I saw it in a local theater here over the weekend.

Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing aswell, and he never fail to impress. He was superb in Gangs of New York. Yet to see There Will Be Blood, but rumours has it he delievered in every way. Re: The last movie you saw
I would add DiCaprio and Ed Norton to that list as well.
I'm not sure I'd put Brad Pitt in it though. He has played some great characters wonderfully (and I've liked nearly all his roles), but I don't really think he has the versatility that these other guys do. Not sure I'd include Colin Farrell either really.
There are some actors that I love and can't get enough of -- Anthony Hopkins, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey -- in certain roles they are kings of the screen. But people like Johnny Depp are in a class of their own, IMO, because of his ability to portray seemingly any character and do it exceptionally well. I think DiCaprio is shaping up that way as well.

Daniel Day-Lewis had a terrific performance in There Will Be Blood...too bad it was the only thing I really enjoyed about the movie (except for the ending scene when Daniel Day-Lewis completely loses it). Although nicely done with high production values overall the movie bored me to tears.Fjoggs wrote:Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing aswell, and he never fail to impress. He was superb in Gangs of New York. Re: The last movie you saw
I think Brad Pitt has an excellent acting range...oh well. The thing about Colin Farrell is that he's REALLY Irish (which is like being REALLY Scottish) which means his real-life accent is so thick that when you can understand what he's saying...it's because he's voice acting.
DiCaprio was good in The Departed and his accent was very good for Blood Diamond (as was his twitchiness in The Aviator)...but he still seems to be the same guy in every movie.

Re: The last movie you saw
yeah, DiCaprio is always playing himself playing a role. Just like Bobby D, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson do.
I'm with you on Brad Pitt, I think he gets highly underrated as an actor. But I'm with rook on Collin Farrell... learning how to talk properly does not make him a good actor. Just means he realized he'd never get a job if nobody could understand the sludge spilling out of his mouth.
oh and Ed Norton rules.

Hellboy II 6/10.
It was okay. I have to agree with what jackel said earlier, it's disjointed. Kind of like they had alot of great ideas for individual scenes, so they strung them together hoping they'd make a good movie. The giant walking dentures in troll alley were so bad I'd like to slap whoever thought of putting them in the movie.

Re: The last movie you saw
I dunno, DiCaprio started off with What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and that was hardly an easy role - it certainly wasn't just playing himself. And I thought his character in The Aviator was highly impressive. He looked like a different person, and his mannerisms were completely different from other roles.
His acting in The Departed stood out to me because he wasn't just playing a kid trying to be a cop, and then playing a kid trying to get in the mob. When he was infiltrating Jack Nicholson's guys, he was playing a guy who was playing a guy trying to get in the mob, and you could tell because did such a good job portraying the inner conflicts of the position.
It's all subjective though, and that's just my opinion.
