I'd be interested in hearing how the US remake of [REC], Quarantine, compares.
Anyone seen it yet?

Quarantine is definitely more polished in terms of production but [rec] had more edge to it.

christ, they've cranked that out fast enough. the original's barely on dvd.

demon 1 and demons 2, 9/10. great entertainment, shame the music seems to get even worse with age but i guess that's personal taste. if/when these get remade i hope someone with money and a shitload of extras does them justice.

max payne, 1/10. almost entirely missed the primary gimmick of the game and mark whatsisname is terrible.

postal, 2/10. uwe boll's masterpiece.

Hellboy 2: 6/10. Generally enjoyable but like the first it hits a yawn patch at about the 1 hour mark where the momentum is lost...and then has to be rebuilt. Ending was a bit goof.

I think you're wrong here. The presentation of the film is supposed to be raw and as such [Rec] was better. Quarantine was a good movie but considering how the film is meant to be delivered it felt way too over-produced. In [Rec] there were very few moments when you thought "why would he be filming this instead of running/defending himself?" whereas in Quarantine there were quite a few instances of that problem.

One thing I'll give Quarantine props for was some very quick but ballsy shots. The scene with the fireman limping out of the back room was quite creepy. Also (and I think this was the best part of Quarantine) when they're running upstairs at the end - when they run by the old lady who is just standing there - that was creepy as fuck.

All in all I found [rec] to have better acting and better atmosphere. Also the lead character in [rec] was far better than the girl in Quarantine. The American chick came off as whiney.

I really enjoyed [rec].
I have seen a lot of zombie movies, but it still felt fresh and original to me.
But maybe a little bit of that freshness and originality can be ascribed to the fact that it was in Spanish, so it had a certain quirky 'euro' quality about it, plus I really dug the lead actress.

This is the first time I hear of an American remake, "Quarantine".
Guess I will watch that at some point, although I already feel averse toward it;
All this cowardly Hollywood regurgitation of proven concepts, whether it be movies or tv shows, is really off puting, and speaks volumes about the poverty of producers playing it safe, instead of being interested and investing in original ideas.

I think it's hard to slight the makers of Quarantine in this case though. They wouldn't be wrong in assuming that movie-goers wouldn't go to see a foreign zombie movie. They were just trying to improve their odds by redoing things in a more "North American" way. At least they recognized that the original was a phenominal movie and wanted more people to see it (hence the fact that Quarantine is practically a shot for shot remake of [rec]).

What I do think is a shame however is that the remake precluded the original from being released over here.

Well, I can understand how Quarantine being an exact remake of the orginal [rec] could work.
Because, for instance, the US version of Funny Games didn't lose much in translation; That was really well done. I felt the same bases were covered, and it had as much of an impact as the original.
However, why do American movie goers have such a problem with reading subtitles?
I realise this isn't preclusively an American thing; Ze Germans have built an entire industry around dubbing foreign movies, for instance, but that just doesn't make sense to me.
I'd much rather watch the original, and read subtitles, than lose details in an interpretation.

I'm not sure it's the general audience, rather than Hollywood focus groups' idea of what audiences want to see.

It's probably the same as in the music industry - as a publisher, why bother spending money on original songs when you might as well just record a cover or do a remix and let the sheeple buy the same thing twice? Or less cynically, just to open up a niche product to a mainstream target group?

not a fan of bond movies, but i did enjoy the books and they're even closer to them with this than they were with casino royale.

only things that bugged me were the stupid title, the theme tune (which sounds like it was originally composed as a ringtone midi) and the idea that anyone would need to import an assassin to haiti.

Indiana Jones and the Something of the whatever.

Finally got round to watching it. What a piece of shit. The action scenes are dreadful CGI bollocks and the whole thing just felt like it was filmed in a studio.

I think Spielberg may have finally lost his marbles.

Firewall - 4/10

Silly and about half an hour too long. Also, Harrison Ford is getting a bit too old for doing action scenes.

Some absolutely hilarious scenes and an amazing Tom Cruise performance. Very, very funny
