Arguing about music with people who don't play it is a waste of time man. Furthermore, even arguing about who is a better anything is a waste of time, cuz it's all subjective to the listener. I think Buckethead is pretty cool, he has some pretty awesome songs, a lot of really dumb shit though. Joe Pass is excellent as well, I get shivers down my spine watching how he creates tension and resolves so well on the fly. I got a DVD of him last xmas, it's good listenin'. Paul Gilbert is sweet too, but like diego said.. totally different genre. To compare him to Joe Pass is pointless.. apples to oranges. Just cause they both play guitar doesn't mean they both play the same music.

Steve Vai & Joey Satriani are way better players than Malmsteen. He gets boring after 3 songs, his style has never changed over the years. Sure he can play fast and accurate, but so do Vai & Satriani. Also Vai & Satriani have much more musical composing talent than Malmsteen.

I can listen to Vai a whole album, something that I could never do with Malmsteen.

Is this guy very good?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNNKzukZ ... ed&search=
At around 1:10 or so in that video he does hopos...i'm completely ignorant to guitar playing so can someone tell me how the guitar is making any noise when he isn't strumming (at least it didn't look to me like he strummed at all)?

And as I was looking at solo's of different guitarists on youtube, from Slash to Vai to whoever, the thing that got me was how many people wanted to say this or that guy sucks - for example, this long bit by slash....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNNKzukZ ... ed&search=

Seems good enough to me but I have no capacity to judge technical prowess or speed or whatever. It's not like these different guitarists are out competing against each other in contests or anything... funny that someone cannot post a solo of one guy without someone else dropping in and creating a big argument about who's better. I can't imagine that the guitarists themselves even bitch and moan about who is better than who as much as the guys in some of those comments do. I can see discussions about who might be the more proficient guitarist in whatever aspect of playing, but some of those guys on the youtube discussions there seem really emotionally attached to the issue and insist that some of these guitarists literally suck.

lol "hopos". imo, being able to do hammer ons and pull offs are essential in electric guitar playing, especially in rock. it's not hard at all and as a matter of fact quite easy, especially what he's doing.

ugh that's some annoying picking that guys does.

Even if you don't pick, the strings vibrate. The pickup is just that sensitive. Of course I have no idea what I'm talking about.

that, and your fret fingers are working a little harder - especially when it's a clean tone vs. a distorted one.

I saw B B King live once. He got blown off stage by his own rhythm guitarist.

Don't be a moron. The other guitarist was technically better AND more soulful.

Despite the fact that your post is an obvious troll, I won't respond in kind.

Buckethead has been a guitar icon long before fucking Guitar Hero II. To give you an idea, the first time I heard of Buckethead was on Primus' cheesy home video (1992, I probably saw it in 95). He's kind of been an in-joke for concert goers for a long time now. I'm a little disappointed he did the song for GH2, but it's outweighed by the fact that it's a fun song to play and his solo is just sick.

Personally, I like Buckethead because he's got some serious chops and is an experimental player. Same reasons I like Tom Morello, Larry LaLonde or John Petrucci.

Now why don't you tell me why he's a hack? I realize it's just your opinion, but I have a feeling it's based on the fact that you're trying be different, or claiming to have some superior musical prowess.

Honestly that was pretty underwhelming. Not sure if you play any instruments or not, but what he played there could be done by pretty much anybody who knows how to transpose a scale to different keys, and knows the basic blues scale.

Plus, with the exception of one part I noticed, he was trying to push his blues sound into the jazz accompaniment, and it kinda made him seem like he was out of his depth with a different style.

His vocals were right on though.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to record yourself doing that tune so we could compare it?

Can anyone on these forums really play guitar well enough to call any of these guys a hack?

With music i've always figured if you like someone's stuff who cares if it is the most technically impressive or whatever?

As a musician, I've found that there is definitely some music that me and my musician friends enjoy that my non-musician friends won't touch because a large part of the enjoyment comes from the technical aspect of the music.

I try not to come off as an elitist asshole when I talk about this subject. I don't think my taste in music is any better than anyone else's. I just think that having a musical background opens up a different level of appreciation for some types of music.

I would liken this to painting. I certainly can't share the same level of appreciation of the Mona Lisa as a painter could, for example.

I basically adhere to the same principle as you do. Art of any kind is inherently subjective. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be art at all.
