If you notice clearly/closely piece of wood went through a drain in concrete(common practice to put a piece of plastic pipe in concrete to drain areas to prevent pooling,in this case it is white pvc plastic)

I'm guessing that same piece of wood with that amount of energy would probably go right a person without slowing down too much.

then you shoot your way out with your awesome modded shotgun with a pistol grip and laser sight!

seriously though. i don't live in a tornado zone, per se, but you're supposed to keep some water, emergency generator, and maybe some preserved food in there for exactly that sort of eventuality. the theory being that someone will dig you out before you die? it at least give you a better chance than laying down a bathtub.

and yes, there are endemic construction problems in the USA. blame amurricahn fear of fascist/socialist government regulation and/or people trading square footage for quality and/or sleazy contractors intentionally not building to code to maximize profit. money money money. check youtube for video of various building materials vs tornado-speed debris.

GONNAFISTYA wrote:Sorry to get off track (and bash the US once again) but this talk of religious crazies reminded me of something that happened very recently:

I returned back from Minneapolis yesterday after spending the weekend there for my brother's wedding. Anyway, I was walking through the lobby of my hotel around 9 am on Sunday and a small group of 5 - 6 room-cleaning staff were on a break in the cafeteria. As I walked by I guess their break was over, as they got out of their chairs and then stood in a circle holding hands and said their daily prayer in unison. These people obviously weren't related (so it wasn't just a religious family I was witnessing) and were just a bunch of co-workers who stopped everything they were doing to hold hands and do what religious nutters do. I admit I was a bit weirded out by the spontaneous, naked display of religiousness that you simply do NOT see in other western countries, Canada/Europe/Australia included.

When it comes to hard-core religious nutters ruling their prospective countries and the attitudes of those that live within its borders, it's obvious to anyone who pays attention that USA = Afghanistan.

Oh yeah...regarding the wedding: the Minnesotans all left the celebration early while the Canadians stayed and emptied the fucking bar. Yanks can't party for shit.

People praying on a Sunday morning...news at 10.

Also its clear the Canadians wanted to stay up and cherish every waking moment they stood upon America's hallowed ground.

Haha, the first couple of comments were in honest amazement and i do maintain the opinion that building those shoddy houses in a tornado zone is a bad bad bad idea... for which there seems to be no good reason at all. Corruption? Too much faith in invisible SkyDaddy? Lack of money? Incompetent illegal contractors? God knows, but it's asking for trouble whatever the reason is.

But once i got started on that curb, yeah, i was talking out of my arse for teh lols :)

Actually there's no real reason to go to all that trouble. If your house is leveled by a tornado and you're stuck in your shelter, you'll be rescued fairly quickly. After Monday's tornado, every house was checked for survivors 3 different times within the first 24 hours. And if you have any friend or family at all, they'll come get you before you even need a drink of water. So there's really no need for all that stuff, unless you plan on using your space as a bomb shelter...

it's mostly money... wood is cheaper than reinforced concrete. The house i rent now is cinder blocks on a slab so i imagine it wouldn't do too bad in a hurricane but I figure the roof will be toast. the flooding would probably do more damage than the wind.
