not to crap on the classics but what's the deal with all this million year old technology they use against us. I mean imagine the shit the alien civilization could do now. Fuck the absolete burried technology... and what's with their lack of research? If they had access to our underground so intimately, why couldn't they figure out that this planet would not be hospitable for their kind?

Saw it yesterday. I too thought the second part after the break was pretty shitty. The end was way to abrupt

Just got back from watching it. What a waste of cash will smith is far better than tom cruise on July 4th flicks

saw it.....Spielberg did some new things and I liked that.

At least the ending wasn't like Signs :lol:

I still love the original movie from the 50's

i just got back from watching it. amazingly immersive :icon14:
spielberg really did an impressive job at bringing a genocide to film.

i liked how he used the dust during the first attack as a reminescence to 9/11 and schindler's list.
and the train scene that was obviously aimed at the trains that transported the jews to the KZ.

about the terrorist thing: i think there are several reasons why they put it in there. at first this shows how kid's are in fear of this invisible enemy. and then, this tells the audience that the film is a reflection on the current situation, a state of fear and percieved vulnerability.

i think, the film should have been crueler at times. i was missing a really severe, shocking scene. the dunging could have been played out better.

the one thing, that really made the film worse, was the ending.
these aliens actually have a bioengineered terraforming plant, that is fueled by human blood but then they die because of the bacteria inside the digested humans? lol...

well... the ending is obviously the weak point of the film. it was ok for wells to use it back then as it had references to the british empire's war strategies. but how could they reuse it for the spielberg version, even though signs and evolution allready persiflaged it?

maybe there's a bit more to the ending words of the narrator. but i've yet to think about them.

oh... and the son should have died. the whole meaning of the scene where he joins the army troops is utterly destroyed by his return.

right, my major conern with the story is, if they buried them a million years ago then wait for humans to evolve just to destroy them

Maybe to figure out what made us able to live here when they can't. But they didn't succeed in figuring it out before it was too late, so they died. Not sure really, just a guess. I also thought it was rather strange, and that's the only thing that I came up with that could make sense.

maybe you forgot that it's based on a HG Wells story written and set end of 19th century in Victorian England and an analogue to European colonial actions in their colonies?

didn't forget at all, Spielberg had plenty of decades to improve upon the plot mechanisms and avoid the deus ex machina.

i think the storytwist is, in fact, that the whole bacteria thing is totally bollocks. it's a giantic deus ex machina... totally unbelievable. and it is in fact the only deus ex machina in the movie.
if the writers would have ended the story in a realistic way, humanity would have been extinguished, no matter what they would have done.
so the film, by it's abrubt and fabricated ending, leaves us with the impression that we are very vulnerable, even though the threat is resolved.
this is as well supported by the unrealistic way the characters reappear in the end. boston is totally destroyed but then, in this tiny appartment, electricity is working and everyone is alive, lol...

i think the ending is intentionally abrubt and unbelievable. either to keep the displeasing feeling or... maybe ray actually died.

on this behalf, the setting in the post 9/11 US is totally vital. a whole society that is complety at guard of an terrorist attack get's invaded and destroyed so quick. if the aliens were again paired against the self confident victorian england, this would have no relevance to our situation.

for the love of god stop saying deus ex machina. it doesnt make you sound intelligent

Saw it today. Decent but not great. Purely as a technical achievement, it's among Spielberg's best...and despite the fact that Tom Cruise is as bright as a can of mandarin orange slices, he creates a very sympathetic character here. So....great SFX, good characters, workable script...why don't I lurv it? The story itself is just not very interesting, scary, or plausible (though I'm sure it certainly was back in 1898). Some stories ARE timeless...this just isn't one of them IMO.
