you watch chick flicks with your dad?
It was a chick flick?

Guess I didn't pay that much attention.

Life Aquatic was great and you should watch it again because you'll notice more background funny.

Steve: No exceptions. Everyone gets one. Anne-Marie! Do the interns get glocks?
Anne-Marie: No. They all share one.

Don't point that gun at him, he's an unpaid intern.

Vickrum! What kind of coverage are you getting?

Seriously Life Aquatic is good stuff.

*Walks into Ali's, ex wife is there with her hunky young lover. Steve is asking for money*

Steve: Who's that dude?

Ex: That's my research assistant, Javier.
Javier, presento Steve.

Steve: You know, I'd be jealous about you staying at Allie's place except I always thought he was kind of a closet queer.

Watched Drive at the weekend.
Given the title, I was expecting some cool car chases. It didn't deliver.
It wasn't a bad film. On the contrary, it was pretty cool. Just not what I was expecting.
It was also incredibly violent; probably needlessly so. I'm not prudish at all, but sometimes I think violence works better when it's implied rather than graphically depicted. Otherwise it can seem out of place. Much like how I felt they didn't need to show the physical state of Jake Gylenhaal's character in Source Code; there, a simple shot of the box would have sufficed.
Sometimes graphic violence just feels out of place when considering the overall tone of a movie.

Edit:
Oh yeah, I also watched Red State recently. Good film, and not what you would expect from Kevin Smith. Sure, it had some punchy dialogue, but it was very dark in tone with nothing really played for laughs. It felt more like a Coen Brothers film. Good stuff.

The Labyrinth 7/10

Kids movie about a girl trapped in a goblin labyrinth, in search of her baby brother that was stolen by the evil goblin king David Bowie. Very bad eighties stuff mixed with muppets and some very bad bowie songs, what's not to like?

Drive 6/10
I think mostly the same things that Matt does, not bad but also not memorable in any way - and what was with the misplaced ultraviolence? The blurb i read made me expect a very different movie. Weird.

Jim Henson did the puppets for the movie

I watched two movies recently:

Blade Runner (the final cut): 6.5/10
Sorry Blade Runner fans, but I can't go any higher than 6.5
Sure the sci-fi noir theming and look of the movie are awesome, even though the vision of the future of the 80's is, in some parts, old fashioned by current day technology levels while we're still a long way from it in other parts (flying cars by the year 2019!)

Anyway, the story is kind of simple, the pace of the movie is sloowwww (even for 80's standards) and the script hinges together kind of awkwardly. Rutger Hauer is putting down a great performance though. The movie gets bonus points for its aesthetics, but other than that, I'm not really impressed. I must admit that my expectations were pretty high though.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: 9/10
Underneath the way the movie has been set up, it's basically just a Romeo/Juliet kind of love story, that kind of starts at the point where Romeo and Juliet ends. But don't let that fool you, it's all poured in an intriguing mould of an almost Memento-like plot. I seriously enjoyed the movie and was pleasantly surprised by Jim Carrey's performance. He's a great actor, but he should stop himself from getting typecast into the crazy face roles he's mostly known for. Kate Winslet is totally adorable in this movie.

you hadn't seen blade runner before? that can't be right. someone should've warned you that it's a pretty slow-paced detective story rather than adrenalin-soaked action horror sci-fi.

Super 8: 6/10

I had not seen any of the trailers for this movie or heard about the plot so it was nice to have no expectations. Reminds me of The Goonies. Great job on the acting and characterization, but I couldn't really care about the main plot or the alien, that ended up being a massive ball of cliche that was rather boring to watch. What kept me interested was the characters. I think as a movie it would have been better if it were grounded more in the real world (no aliens or secret military) and just be a coming-of-age story about young filmmakers making a movie during a natural disaster.

The Descendants = 4/10 - The most cynical presentation of "Oscar Bait" I've ever seen in my life. The whole film is one depressing scene after another in what amounts to a completely pointless plot and lukewarm ending. By my non-scientific tally, there are approximately 4 seconds of levity in the whole two hours.

It's not a boring film, it's just one that leaves you wondering why you spent the money when you could have watched something better.

Stay away from Star Wars. It's a kids film about rescuing a princess from the evil lord.

have made a few folks watch blade runner and all but one (who turned out to hate scifi in general) liked it. personally i think the opening scenes (any version) are enough of a clue as to the pacing, but have always introduced it as a scifi remake of the big sleep - which is more or less what it is. fucking love that movie, must not start rambling.

Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy Vehicle - 2/10
not a movie, but not deserving of a thread either. avoid, even if you're a boosh fan - especially if you're a boosh fan.

Yeah me either, it's supposed to be a classic so I've been meaning to watch it, but still haven't gotten around to it yet.

Last movie I watched? The Manchurian Candidate, which I followed up with the first two episodes of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

I think the reason a lot of people haven't seen it (including myself, although its sitting on my table in a Netflix envelope) is because it's never on cable TV. Most older movies like that are played over and over, but I can't remember ever seeing it on cable...

Yeah that's interesting, I've never seen it on TV. Yet they play Star Wars, Terminator, Alien, and others on TV all the time, I wonder why that is...
