What to do

Well my pc has been pretty ill recently, lots of memory errors and random crashes etc. I flashed the BIOS with the correct one (downloaded through an abit windows program automatically) and now its bust.

Im thinking, should I really replace my socket A motherboard (considering they're end of line now) or use this as an excuse to upgrade (Ive got a chunk of cash in my bank account from my summer job) Also bear in mind i'll probably have to replace the RAM too

I've been looking around and I've picked out some specs. its most likely going to be 6800GT, 2GB ram etc. What im stuck on, is if i do decide to upgrade, which processor to get.

I've looked at the X2 3800+ and the regular 4000+. is it worth getting a dual core processor considering that programs aren't yet written to utilise it? let alone 64bit aswell.

Comments welcome,

Thanks

David

Edit: to add to the temptation i've spotted a 7800GT for £230. So i could get one of those and perhaps a 3700+ san diego and 2gb ram etc...

Argh damnit

Go with the X2. Windows already uses multithreading and apps which also do will be along soon.

i don't understand how flashing your bios was going to improve your situation to begin with. your pc used to run fine, then it starts to accumulate these random errors/crashes? why would you blame that on firmware?

My pc didn't used to be fine before the flash as i was getting ram errors across the board.

right, but at some point, your pc was running fine, THEN you got these errors, then you decided the flash the bios. correct?

then i'm afraid, imo, they steered you wrong. i would have started with checking your RAM first. the bios is the last place i'd be looking. pretty rare occurence that your firmware would all of a sudden go tits up.

but, it sounds like you have your mind made up to updgrade.

Well i could get the bios replaced, or buy another socket A motherboard. But I'll no doubt have to get new ram anyway and i dont see it very ecomomical replacing both a socket a motherboard and ram for a Athlon XP setup, which will no doubt need replacing soon. Correct? or is it a bad time to upgrade?

the decision of when to upgrade is solely individual.
