videocard cooling question

i got this gfx card, right, a Geforce6600GT 256MB.
this thing is silent as a church mouse, until I actually use it for something else than windows. when i fire up HalfLife2 its RPM shoot up, it sounds like a leaf blower. the game doesnt have to be so GFX intensive, either - even Max Payne the original Dooms trigger this 'problem'.

sometimes it takes him 5 minutes to start his vacuuming, sometimes its after 10 seconds. itll stop when i quit to windows.
fun thing to note; it'll stop during the Max Payne credit roll (as its likely 2D only?) but wont in the menu screens.
its also silent when i use a 3d program like radiant or the serious sam editor.

the card runs fine with steady FPS, it just can get quite loud.

it this my machine telling me I need some more cooling in there? or is my card being a bitch for some reason?
anyone had similar issues with vidcards (other than the FX series ;) )

You could put an nV Silencer on it... put one on my ATi card.

i have another machine which has a 6800GT in it, and that thing is very, very silent.

i assumed they learned from their FX mistakes

Wait a sec. What you said reminded me of something.

Do you have an AGP or PCI-E one? The AGP cards have the bridge chip, right? That might interfere with this. I honestly don't know though.

Edit:
P.S. The mounting holes are universal for all cards of the same series (6600/GT, 6800/GT/Ultra, X800GT/XL/XT etc.)

I think I'll go to the store this weekend and ask some more info, and most likely take one home with me.

i'll post when theres any progress :)

well, installed the NV Silencer 6 about 30 mins ago.. and it works great! hardly any sound ( i heard its cooldown when i quit halflife but other than that i didnt notice it at all), and no performance loss of any kind.

thanks a million sir, that was a great tip!!
