hy all,

i searched the forum and googled aswell but i just cant make it work.

so here is the problem: i just can's config the microsoft proxy server to work with quake3.

i opened all those ports you all specified in the topics i found. and even tried adding +set net_port 27961 to the command line.

the net monitor tells me i am accesing the proxy using that port. i set the subsequent inbound and outbound ports to 27960-27980 both TCP and UDP (also tried only UDP/TCP).

it just stays on the awaiting challange screen.

any help would be usefull, thnx

I never experienced problems with connecting to any masterservers after i upgraded. The fact that says you arrive at the awaiting challenge screen makes me believe it isn't a problem with your connection but with quake itself. But i'm no expert.

This proxy server you mention, what kind of a proxy server is it?

Microsoft Proxy server is for web surfing, it does not allow someone to play games through it.

No real good idea then. Try another server?

actualy the MPS acts like a router (but a bit more complicated config). so i just need to know on what ports does the server talks to me (cause UDP is one way ccomunication)
to set that port forwarded to me.

Okay, but all the information I can find points to Microsoft Proxy Server only being used for HTTP, FTP and a few other basic protocols. Is it a different proxy?

Anyways, the only port required for Q3 is 27960 UDP.

Is your proxy blocking IP ranges? master3.idsoftware.com resolves to 192.246.40.56 (which is down quite often BTW) so you'll want to make sure it's reachable and pingable.

here is the screen i deal with when configuring the server: http://www.aws.com/support/Image3.jpg

the first port i enter in there is the port my computer uses to send or recieve data. the second one (port ranges) is the port my computer is trying to connect to (so i am using port x to connect to server at port y)

what i need is this: if i am talking to the server i am using port X and the server recieves that on its port Y, what ports are X and Y. also when the server responds to me, on which port does it send the data?

awaiting connection could be punkbuster having a problem connecting?
i don't know a thing about port forwarding so i googled this

"Do I have to re-configure my firewall or proxy to use PunkBuster?

In general, if a connection can play the Game online successfully without PunkBuster, then there will be no need to make any changes to a firewall or proxy that may be in use when PunkBuster is Installed and Enabled. PunkBuster communicates over the Internet (and in LAN environments) using the same network channels created and used by the Game, and therefore requires no changes. If, however, you had to adjust your firewall to use the game in the first place, you may need to extend that adjustment to include ports used by PB's auto-update feature. PunkBuster Clients use outgoing UDP Port 24349 to get security info from the PunkBuster Master Servers, PunkBuster Servers use UDP Ports 24349 and 24305."

In general, your client will be sending and receiving data on UDP port 27960 so add a rule to your proxy to allow incoming and outgoing traffic on said port. You can manually update PB with pbweb.
