When you are installing windows XP home and you boot off of the CD and after a minute it says setup is starting windows and then you click set up windows.

After this it says Examining 31163 MB disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi.

It is sitting on this above line for many minutes. Anyone know what this means.

Yes, valid copy of XP

This is with a new motherboard as the old one died. And new RAM

Hmmm, could be errors on the drive or some kind of hardware issue. Can you try installing xp on a different drive? See if it at least passes that step?

Do you mean a different hard drive in the suspect computer?

Actually, I just tried a different CDROM and it seems to be working fine. Went past that step in about 3 seconds, which is normal.

Thank you for your reply so late in the day

Well, after it got to 100% formatted, it said Windows could not format this disk etc.

So, I tried again with quick format and it kept saying to insert correct cd and crap liike that. So I just opened the cd rom tray and closed it again and now it is working again.

Is this weird shit or what?

Check the cable is on the right way into the hard drive, that it's at the right location on the cable, and that the jumpers are set appropriately for the drive.

TBH Sounds like the IDE controller on the motherboard is a duffer.
