lettuce ~ how do you get it

Just wondering how you obtain your lettuce?

Do you go for the original and best and "roll your own" (wash, break leaves off as required) or do you go and buy the pre-packaged stuff we are now seeing on the shelves in the supermarkets?

10 points if you grow or pick your own from the filed btw :D

Just asking 'cause I have gone to buying the pre-packaged stuff :icon26:

I use fresh and pre-packed. Combine it with a nice vinagrette, Romana tomatoes, basil, rockett = yummie.

Simple Vinagrette:

- 2/3 extra virgin olive oil
- 1/3 red balsamico vinegar
- tablespoon Dijon mustard
- pepper, seasalt

Pre-chopped lettuce, just like pre-grated bags of cheese, are laughable.

Fucking lol. Just spotted 'for chefs who take pride in their work'.

Is marketing all about telling the most obvious and blatant lie nowadays?

Sometimes I buy a full head of lettuce - I like it better that way - but it usually goes bad before I can use it all, so it's more often the smaller servings.

i've discovered fresh baby spinach salad. tastes pretty much the same as reg. lettuce but i hear it actually has some good stuff in it.

i tried that frisse(sp?) lettuce but it tastes like shit.

I never go for the pre-packaged stuff; those are rife with bacteria. The gf occassionally grows it herself, but I don't always have access to it. I go for romaine, boston, or baby spinich when I buy it.

Spinnach is full of iron and oxidants.

the fresh baby spinach tastes good though or rather a neutral taste.

Grow our own, though when that runs out just go for the original still-whole.

The only kind I buy in a bag is Ruccola, because that's the only way you can get it here.

:icon14:

It costs twice as much, lasts half as long, and it only takes 30 seconds to cut up a head of lettuce anyway.
