I'm doing a research paper on what my college currently does to help make its campus a safer place, particularly at night. to help my paper be a bit stronger i want to compare the programs that my college offers compared to others.
to give you an idea here are some things that my college currently offers in terms of making things safer:
Saferide - students can call to have someone come pick them up and give them a ride around campus at night if they dont feel safe walking alone.
safety beacons - there a bunch of lighted poles around campus with buttons on them that when pressed contacts authorities that something bad is happening.
thanks in advanced.

This is kind of what you are looking for. Our cab service in my town offers a free ride home to college students that are to drunk to drive.
That isn't directly the school's doing, but maybe the college pays them so much per month or sommat?

The closest thing my college had to a security service was an RA who pretended not to know you were smoking pot in your room.

Well at my uni (Northwestern), we had some student sit in the lobby of every dorm from 8pm-12 am (until 3 am on the weekends). His job was to take names of guests entering the building.
Problem was that people came into the building in groups, say 2-3 etc. residents or so and the student doesnt want to stop them (and he shouldnt). But sometimes it might be 1 student and 1 guest and the student would never know. So essentially there were tons of guests that never got marked down. They would only register people who were obviously guests. Like if the guest is standing outside the locked front entrance and a resident came to the front entrance and opened it for them.
If you ask me it was all a front to make the school shrug off a little liability if any bizarre security infraction happen in the dorms.
Hope that helps.
edit: we also had that ride stuff you mentioned

About the same as what you have Stu. They had people to escort students across campus at night and they installed lights along the paths between buildings.
