Fast Defrag 2 Professional

It's a ram defragger. Any good? Seems to cause sporadic system slow downs, though that may be caused by any number of other programs.
Most of those are decent but you don't need Fast Defrag (as Jug said, its snake oil) and you don't need Sygate providing you have a router in place (unless you really see a need for outbound protection).Massive Quasars wrote:My entire system maintainance regime:
- Fast Defrag 2 Professional
- Norton AV (scheduled scans daily)
- MS antispyware (scheduled scans daily, auto-updates)
- Sygate Personal Firewall Pro
- Executive Software Diskeeper 9 (scheduled HD defrags daily, defrags HDs much quicker than regular defrag prog)

unless he's possibly got spyware that MS anti hasn't caught yet. Kerio Personal Firewall is light and a great alternative to Sygate.Tormentius wrote:...and you don't need Sygate providing you have a router in place (unless you really see a need for outbound protection).[/color]
I've disabled this program for now.Massive Quasars wrote:My entire system maintainance regime:

I've not used Sygate, only tested Kerio and ZoneAlarm for friends/family. Kerio was a clear choice, imo. This is of course only used in conjunction with a router and for "heavy clickers". If you know your system is clean, and you have a router, kill a process by eliminating the software firewall.Massive Quasars wrote:Sygate is also light, but is Kerio superior?
It's much quicker when it's more frequent, I set it for a time when I'm away from the computer. I mentioned that these defrags were by design much faster than normal defrags, coupled with low fragmentation after a day's use, the defrags are downright speedy.+JuggerNaut+ wrote:btw, isn't a DAILY defrag a bit overkill?
I manage to bring any system I use to it's knees over time, unfortunate fact. From my personal experience, defrags help a good bit, enough to justify their scheduled use in this case.Foo wrote:I don't notice any performance gain with degragging since I moved from Windows 98.
Minor gains, but nothing that makes it worth doing.
only time i ever noticed a performance gain was when someone hadn't EVER done one on their pc after two years. other than that, a quarterly one is good enough for me, but not necessary.Foo wrote:I don't notice any performance gain with degragging since I moved from Windows 98.

what's "over time"? i reinstall at least once a year just because. instead of third party apps maybe you should consider doing that more often. not a big deal once you ghost it or do an unattended install.Massive Quasars wrote:I manage to bring any system I use to it's knees over time, unfortunate fact. Agreed. Once a week is even overkill IMO. Once a month is more than enough and the built-in defrag app does the trick just fine (and eliminates another background process such as the one Diskeeper leaves active).+JuggerNaut+ wrote:btw, isn't a DAILY defrag a bit overkill?
Yes, there a couple excellent memory management apps available: they're called Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Both OS' do a more than adequate job of managing their own memory. Check the link Foo posted for a more detailed explanation.Massive Quasars wrote:Btw, are there no good programs for managing RAM out there?
