It's not just you. Vista looks crap.

It's kinda depressing how hard they are trying to be like OSX, but will never be able to get there without overhauling the whole OS. The constant failing to deliver on the more exciting features doesn't help, either.

As soon as Mac OS is realised on x86, i'm dualbooting it with XP, and hopefully using the Mac OS as much as possible. Fingers crossed, i suppose

I was thinking:
-Take Windows XP
-Add a load of DRM and other shit that no consumer actually wants
-Sprinkle liberally with an upgraded IE that retains the shoddy legacy code underneath and hacks in tabbed browsing
-Cripple support for non-MS game technology
-Use a combination of cheap graphical tricks and drop support for older OSs
-Bet it all on user ignorance and the inherent monopoly of the OEM model.
-????????
-Profit!

The future is looking interesting. I really hope Vista is fucked up badly for a number of reasons:
1. There's nothing inherently wrong with Windows XP right now. It looks OK, runs OK, has great support all round, and no pressing flaws that justify a whole new OS
2. Linux is becoming a contender. This has died down over the last 6-12 months a lot, but is still a factor.
3. Google/Sun are looking into the OS market. Good times

Little more than a rumour right now, I think.

I would imagine we're looking at a custom Linux build, more or less. Which is just what the OS market could do with.

I'm afraid of what google would bring to the OS market, in the sense that I think it will be bad. Too many OSes are going to try to take over, which is a very bad thing -- the x86 market needs a monopoly controlling the OS section, but unfortunately the OS in power is shit. Microsoft are all about money, profit, and how to con everyone into thinking they are winning by getting the OS, and they hold this value above things like what the consumer wants, what's good for the market, etc.

I hope someone like Apple could corner a large part of the x86 OS market, because their software is tight, and i like what they do.

OS X for x86 (Intel) will only run on Mac PCs. I think they'll include a chip which will be required to run the OS.

But yeah, I'll be running a dualboot too.

~With the money Google could throw behind it, i'm sure it would work. Because if something didn't they would change it.

You would hope that with the money Microsoft could throw behind an OS, they'd be evolving, instead of devolving :(

They are trying, but I don't think they have the talent.

That's harsh. I'd say bureacracy hinders the talent within MS

It's actually pretty cool guys, but basically XP with alot more candy.

I've been messing with it for about 2 months now at work, the current beta does not work on nvidia based nic cards, by the way.

Pretty decent though, I'm gonna enjoy it. the way the windows pull up is a nice piece of work as well.
