ok i wanted to reinstall q3 and pb is being a pain in the ass, i read the faq but it still isn't working.

i can get into servers, but pretty soon afterwards i am thrown back into spec mode and it tries to update, fails, and sends me back to the main menu.

You can try \pb_cl_enable 1 to start punkbuster. If that's working you can update it manually by following the instructions on the
http://www.punkbuster.com site. Sometimes servers require you to have game parameters within certain ranges. For example, servers I play on require the "rate" parameter to be between 2500 and 3000, so folks with crappy connections wont bog down the server. It will kick folks who do not have these parameters set properly. When you're kicked, scroll up in the console to see what parameters were not set correctly. If its not a parameter problem, punkbuster will still report what went wrong, such as duplicate CD keys, improper initialization or inability to update, etc.
