No openAL, but it works in other things?

I tried messign with the sound in the menu, but it just wont do anything other than volume. It says i have no open AL, when i know I DO have openAL because I have to have it installed to work on the sound in Quake II Evolved. So all my drivers + open AL are up to date...
It works in Q2E, and everything else, yet here it says "open al not supported" or something...
Hmmmmmmm... Anybody else?

Yea, I get the same message. However, I may not have OpenAL support - I don't know, never tested it. Is there a way I can find out? I have an nforce chipset with 5.1 surround, so I would assume OpenAL is supported, but not sure.

One of my buddies has an Audigy and was having some problems getting the sound to work right with it. He went to
http://www.openal.org/downloads.html and grabbed the 1.1 installer from there and fixed his problem. That may be worth a try.

Yeah, I'm having the same problems even though I have openAL 1.1 installed and Q2e works fine with it.
I have an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 soundcard, though apparently, other people using Creative cards can't seem to get it to work either.

Mine is working now that I've upgraded to the Nforce4 board.

Or you could try the new BETA SB drivers......

No direct link because i'm not sure what soundcard you have. I have Audigy 4 and have much improved sound in Q4 since upgrading the drivers.

I have an nforce 4 board onboard my mobo, and i'm pretty sure its BETTER than the sound card i ahve now because it was a decent mobo. Shipped with Surround sound too out of the bix... I'll install it later.

OpenAL support is crap on Nforce boards. Mainly because it's Creative's proprietry API, blah blah blah. Only good side is (for native Soundstorm chipsets anyway) is that it can decode dolby digital in realtime. Same goes for EAX support, it's crap because Nvidia's drivers aren't up to the task.
That's my opinion on it anyway.
PS - What's a 'bix' anyway?!!

My nforce board came with a Creative CD for the audio drivers and software.

Isn't the primary reason for getting an nforce board IS the better audio? I would imagine you guys would run that instead of creative cards. It's supposed to be a lot better.
(Ok, the better sound, and maybe better intergration with nvidia cards blablabla)

No, I am using the onboard audio from the nforce chipset - 5.1 works GREAT - but I had to install the drivers from a Creative cd that came with the board; not from the MSI cd with the rest of the drivers.

yeah, works in your game...but not in quake 4.
and tbh, never worried with it in any other game.
