I've heard Start

Run

"cmd" :: Enter
Once the cmd prompt is up, Alt-Enter, then Alt-Enter again.
Lemme know if that works

Hey riddla, I get the same thing. You know what I did that works? Go to display properties ( right click on your desktop) and choose a screensaver and do a quick preview of it then move your mouse to stop it. That brings the normal colours back. I found the screensaver that works for me is 3D Pipes, but I'm sure others work.

this legitimately works though

Ah, didn't read that article before. How do I do it for a 9800pro?

What you can do is to start Quake 4 and type this:
developer 1
crash
It should crash the game and reset the brightness settings.

The reason these fixes work is becuase you just need to start another program that runs under openGL (3D pipes and Quake 3 both do too).
I get this bug from time to time too.

or you can upgrade to nvidia's new drivers v81.85 which fix the problem for me and I have a BFG 6800GT 256mb.

It's actually due to the fact that some older videocard drivers had a problem with the game's copy-protection (Macrovision) scheme.
It's more a bug in the Macrovision than it is in the game or video drivers.

i get this in q3 as well when al+tab-ing but that's with ignorehwgamma 0. is there a similar setting for q4?

That for both ATi & Nvidia?
When I had earlier drivers, it was easy to go in and reset the gamma. But the Catalyst Control Center is shit.

Works for my nVidia, it's only a small file anyway so you might asl well give it go, it's not going to do any damage
