Getting settings that I adjusted int he console to save???

Eveytime I change a setting in the console, it doesnt save when I start quake back up again. How do I make it so that everything I adjust in the console saves into my config?

ex:
seta bind f12 screenshotJPEG

try in the console after making a change
writeconfig q4config
may have to try
writeconfig q4config.cfg
or better yet
writeconfig autoexec
do so after backing up the original first
