Quake Free

Hey

Few days ago I started on this project. The basic idea is to remove all copyrighted stuff and make the free version of Q3. I'm using weapons models from Lee David Ash, and around 10 quality player models downloaded from polycount. Of course, I plan to send emails to authors to get their permission.

I whould be greatful for a list of good Quake 3 maps which contain as much as possible custom textures.

Also, what exactly is copyrighted, and what isn't? I know that maps, models and 2D art are copyrighted, but what about shaders and bot scripts? Are they also under GPL license on not?

So, is anyone interested in this project?
If any coder whould like to help me, we could modify Q3 engine, so it supports per pixel lightning and other "modern" eye candy effects...

They are not, they're covered by the Q3A EULA.

Misa (is it ok to call you that? :paranoid: ) have you heard the rumor of cpma going stand-alone? I think it would be great if it did. Should attract more players. I would definately play it if it did. However I see a big problem that all art assets would have to be re-drawn from scratch.

Well I'm sure they could get the go-ahead from the mappers to include all their custom maps. The id maps don't fit into cpma gameplay that nice anyway. I imagine they could make a few cool-looking cpma type player models. Then they could take the stock id weapons and re-make them from scratch. Should keep id happy. I just hope that they do include re-makes of those original guns, because if they look different it would be somewhat lame.

Just the source is GPL. You do the rest from scratch without using any copyrighted original id content.

Be warned that LDA's weapons DOES use some id content, for example some muzzleflashes

i'm already working on OpenArena btw, which has a goal to not use hobbyists' models freely downloadable from the internet (Besides, they often copyright the models to themselves instead)

There's some general talk about it from the community but I have yet to hear anyone from the CPMA team confirm it. IIRC, the matter was brought up a couple of months ago in their forums and arQon seemed to be rather opposed to the idea (though I've forgotten why).

I don't think a stand-alone CPMA would attract that much more players. It's a difficult scene to get into: lots of trash talking and elitist bastard behaviour. Moreover, newbies often get owned so hard that they quit right away (ask Oeloe, he's got a few good stories to tell about that).

Sure. Or just mis, what most people call me. Saves you 25% in keystrokes.

If someone creates a "free" Q3 using original assets etc, good for them. CPMA will happily run on it just fine without us needing to do anything, and most of the recent CPMA maps were explicitly built using non-id textures just so that they WOULD still be usable in that environment if it ever appeared.

IOW, I'm not opposed to it at all, but neither am I going to waste any of my time (or ask other members of the team to) on such makework. That doesn't mean they can't be approached individually, but it's certainly not a goal of the project itself or a direction I plan on taking it in.

I think common.shader might be the only gpl-safe file from the paks, but I dunno. Is Todd Hollenshead gonna go beserk over clipclipclip?

oh and finally, i hope no one is low enough to resteal id's annoying tinfx textures. I see that shite-excuse-for-an-environment-map everywhere

Also, isn't mapmodels built into the map polygons on compile anyway? It'd be hard to snag maps that used q3a's stock models of course.
