Not sure how I'm supposed to vote on this.
I do care because Map-Center was an interesting place for the game developing community to gather together and share resources. The more channels of communication that the community has at hand, the more we can progress with our knowledge and the larger the growth of community members.
On the other hand, I don't care all that much because personally, I rarely visited Map-Center.

Well hopefully the 'data' won't be lost. We're trying our damnest to save everything in the form of the database so we can go on from there if need be. Final call is really up to Astrocreep as the owner of the site.

Yeah that's my main concern, make sure none of the content posted on MC goes missing.
I would do a complete HTTrack rip of the site, but it's rather impolite without prior arrangement.

It's a v.e.r.y. long story, but surfice to say nothing has moved or happened on the site for quite some time so the owner has decided to throw in his lot. The 'team' behind the general day to day running of things are working on 'things' but nothing can be confirmed... yet.

I think its sad, it was, really the second site for me to visit when it came down to Q3 mapping. Its very sad, that site has been there for years, now it will only be this place.

I used to spend more time on MC than any other site on the whole internet, even the ones with dirty pictures. I used to spend a lot of my time giving help and advice there and it felt good to be doing it, but basically stopped posting several months back because it was becoming increasingly apparent that Astro had absolutely lost interest in the site and it was nothing but a burden to him. The site didn't have a future, and posting there any more would just be encouraging people to stay there instead of moving on, which they needed to do.

Hi Kat, it dONKEY.....had to reregister....lost password, couldnt remember old email, doh!
I think I've said in private everything I need to say about MC's future. But for the record, it's sad and a great shame. Although the site has stood still for a while, it doesnt mean that it always had to be that way. Q4 could have picked things up, and in anycase the JA forum was still pretty active. My hope is still that at the very worst Astro will allow the data from MC to be transfered to another site.
...oh, good to see you again Shallow...I rather missed you pointing out when I got stuff wrong.

Hoi hoi donkey!. Aye, we're still waiting on word from Astro but as for the reasons, I think Shallow pretty much summed it up.

Hi donkey!
Yeah it's a shame about the JK forum in particular, it was probably getting more posts per day than the rest of the forums combined at the time I abandoned MC. Hopefully those people can relocate to DarthG's since it looked like he was doing an excellent job with that site last time I peeked at it.

I remember way back mapcenter had a 1024x1024 mapping contest, I had a completed map entered into it and was looking forward to the results and seeing what other people entered. Astrocreep cancelled the whole thing cause there wasn't enough entries so for those of us who made maps, it was a complete waste of time. Not really astro's fault but he could have at least posted our maps for everyone to check out, but didn't. So that kind of left a bad taste in my mouth for that place, so to speak.

@Techx
Agreed.
Everytime map-center was re-designed again and again arbitrarilly, users have to re-submit their avatars and some of them had gone(personally my 1st baby avatar which was my best.) :icon33:

read it more than post at it, but wouldn't want to lose the resource.
hopefully astro would be up for letting someone copy/archive the content - at least until it can be rolled into sites for its respective subjects.
