Is there anything special on the targa format at saving it?

I wanted just to know if there are differecenes between uncompressed and compressed targa's?
Normally I save without this or uncompressed.
Has it to do with the quality of the image you are saving?
Please help me out of this and thanks a lot guys.

Sometimes compressed fucks up the image. DONT DO IT!

TGA compression uses run-length encoding, which is lossless, so using it shouldn't hurt. I have yet to see the "fuck ups" as described by odium.

Compressed TGAs still cause a problem for Warsow, but they seem to work OK in Q3. The size difference is appreciable, too.

Thanks guys it helped me much.
I was asking in my company but they dont use the targa file format.
Is there a way to get some more informations about the computer files?
I mean the endings like ase format etc...
Might be good because it's not bad to know a bit more about that stuff.
So It makes no sense if I use compressed or not.
I was thinking about that that it might be has to play a role around your texture graphic.
Thanks a lot guys.

Menu right bottom has info on the main image formats. You'll probably need to googles specific formats as it brings up too much info to just do a "file formats" search.

Typing the extension or the format's name in Wikipedia's search bar should take you straight to the right page. Or else the disambiguation link will get you there.

I don't know if it's the same on the PC version but Photoshop on OSX adds a lot of 'meta information' to the .tga file. I always re-save it with a app called Graphic Converter in which one has the option to leave out all that extra crap that PS spews into the file. The difference in file size is really substantial. For jpegs instead of the 'save as' option I use PS's 'save to web' function which also yields smaller files without any meta info.

cheers

In PS7, before the patch, there were some really annoying issues with TGAs, but after that, and in 8 there hasen't been any problems at all.
I also tend to save 'as web' when I'm about to use JPGs as webpage images, not 'beuty or information' pics...

Thanks guys.
I know that ps 7 and 8 have not much chanched but in 8 you can have more about the filters.
There I have the prob that I don't can really get the metal style when creating a metal texture.
The targa , so codey, does this mean it has severeal other functions between mac osx schittt and pc versions?
I think I should try it and see what's happenning.
Hipshot...the ps8 is great but I guess that they upgrate ps too much and too heavy, as also they don't added a 64 bit's image format for the converter in the menu because ps can't handle it.
It might be intressted to know why.
Think that that thing is like the alpha channels with 16 24 32 bits.
24 saves memory for games.
Anyway, as a small gift i show you now two shots of the dog in our silent hill mod and if we can process forward , we could finish a alpha at the end of the year or next year quartal 1.

That looks great Rept. Nice model there!

Sorry for a bit OFT here, but, the strangest thing happend to me before, and I must add, that this has NEVER happend before. But when I was fiddeling with some command in Q3 and made some vid_restarts, suddenly, one of my JPGs went 'corrupt' in that way that, for some reason, Q3 or something had added a semitransparent white line over it, very odd, very odd. Looked awfull of course and I had to remake the texture.

Thanks hips..
Yes jpeg's aren't the best format but they are small and for this you have to be carefull when saving them.
I choose always best quality and the 1 of the 3 options and a quality of 12 points.
So you can take 6 too it saves space and you don't see much differences.
I know when opening a jpeg from a macOs shit thhen with a double click on it it opens with picture viewer not with photoshop.
Only if I drag and drop that in the ps icon on the klickstarter it opens first.
So you see osx has troubles seeing ps - jpg format picutres in osx and opening timing...
There they need to do something.
I would make all textures in tga and save them with 16 pixels so it doesnt make also more differcenes than 32 bit or 16.
But 16 save's cpu memory.
Slap me if I tell some shit..

You can't use 16-bit TGA's with Quake3/Doom3/Quake4.

You can only use 24-bit and 32-bit TGA's. There is no quality difference between 24-bit and 32-bit TGA's, but there is a difference in file size. You only need to use 32-bit TGA's if you have an alpha-channel in your texture, otherwise use 24-bit.

you also don't need to compress the TGA itself (RLE) if you put it in a compressed pk3/pk4 anyway. zip does a good job at compressing "simple" (few colors, big areas) TGAs

I learn here more than @ my workplace fucking hell I still love that forum mostly.
Now I learned something new.:)
When compressing it is like at the pictures who are saved as zip or jpg in the options menu in photoshop.
I have to read more about the others at the link ya gave me.:)
Btw..why doesn't work 16 bit with q3 d3 q4?
I always thoughted it does..so when not I have to resave all my textures used for the mod now...that might be a hard piece of work again..
Edit: Warsow I never heared of it Foo.
But did you have a look on evelnore or however that game is called?
Also trone quest or I cant rembmer the names on that games but pathologic will become sure cool.
It's like phantasmagoria only in 3d.
The other game is a great adventure diablo in egyptian style or rome style but pretty nice, if I find the link again I'll post it.
Edit2:
Sorry for beeing late O'dium..
