Hey guys

I'm looking to buy the cheapest creative card possible to enable openal in quake4, what are my options? Also, I see peeps having performance problems with certain cards, so whats the cheapest sound card, with nice performance when openal is enabled.

I was lookinh at audigy2 value, will that do the trick?

Another thing, about demos, I record a demo, but when I play it back, it plays back at half speed (30fps), and ideas how to fix this? I also want to know how to record netdemos, when i try it gives me an error in the console.

Any help would be appreciated, thx

twis

I dont know on the soundcard question.
On the demo playing at half speed. I had this problem when using "recorddemo".. Using recordnetdemo fixed the playback speed.

OpenAL works here on my SB Audigy (1). Doesn't seem so to cause FPS drops, although i didn't play big DM or CTF games with it yet.

I have read that lower grade audigy 2's do not work, I have yet to get q4 to recognize my audigy 2... :dork:

what audigy 2 do you have, which version??

have you dloaded th "drivers" from openal.org?

and have you dloaded the beta creative drivers?

before you install the betas you have to remove all older bersions (drivr cleaner), then install the new ones

lol..... I have searched around so much for an answer, I already know some of the troubleshootin, dont even have an audigy :/

I just bought the audigy2 sz gamer for $70 from newegg. It installed fine but crashed once while playing. After the crash to desktop I was unable to launch q4. I had to download the openal driver from creative to get it to work again, have not had an issue since.

I was under the impression that most if not all sound cards support OpenAL with the proper drivers.

Yes but iD/Raven has been nice enough to make OpenAL work only on (some) Creative cards (perhaps some others i haven't heard of). :icon7: People have been reporting that with chipsets that support OpenAL and the appropriate drivers installed, the OpenAL option stays grayed out in the Q4 menu.

Something we can hope to see fixed in a patch.

I wouldn't personally recommend hardware upgrades to work around software bugs, but that's up to you.

Yeah one of the key items I am hoping for in the patch.

1. Auto download. CRITICAL
2. Sound optimization. I have an audigy 2, sounds is still fucked.
3. Anything to boost fps at all I read that there is a refresh error of some kind in MP which may be causing some problems? I will try and find a link...
4. Console / scripting!
5. mouseaccel!

You cant use recordnetdemo when you're the server :p

Best option is to run a dedicated server on your computer, then start quake4 and connect to yourself.

It's a bad idea to use recorddemo, because you are limited to 30fps and the file sizes are HUGE.

Unfortunately, most cards don't natively support OpenAL so the drivers have to do everything in software. This can be quite a strain on the CPU and cause all kinds of erratic behaviour, from stuttering sound to system lockups.

Omg! Just like Q3, where listen server demos played back at 20 fps when sv_fps was 20.
