I want to install Linux onto an old pentium 166mhz computer I have. I'm want to use it as a shitty web server. Can anyone reccomend a good, free Linux distribution to use?

head over to distrowatch.com and try some live cd's out. keep in mind that speeds depend on RAM and drive speed.

I use Gentoo but previously used Slackware.

You don't want to use Gentoo on a P166 or you'll be busy compiling for a month. Like Juggernaut said, go with DSL or Debian (or one of its derivates). How much memory does the box have?

Give
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ a try. I only hope your website doesn't generate too much traffic or the kernel will be forced to continously swap pages in and out of memory. Which is bad for performance, obviously.

with 32 megs of ram it will be hard for X to start..
