sound issues

For some reason the sound in my quake game is lagging by 3 secs. It only occurs in quake and right from the ID logo, the sound is slow. Makes it very hard to hear someone coming up behind me.
Any thoughts?
I've reinstalled quake and the issue only occurs in this game and none others.

Try updating your soundcard drivers.

I had that problem once too, using different soundcard drivers fixed it for me.
