mpeg/avi problems

Every time I play an mpeg or any video format from my pc it skips or pauses for a sec or two. Playing dvd's from my cd/dvd drive does the same thing also. I have tried installing many different codec packs but still nothing. The latest codec pack I installed was k-lite and that helped a little but not fixed it. Any suggestions?

specs:
xp pro sp2
p4 3.0
2gb pc3200
9800xt
Plextor px716a
250gb sata Maxtor 16mb cache.

which player are you using out of curiosity?

try media player classic or vlc. your specs look plenty good. i have no issues playing any video files, even up to 780p on a 1.6Ghz/512mb/64mb vid

I have used them all.
vlc/divx/media player clasic/windows media/real/quick. all the same issues.
They all play fine if I burn them to dvd and play them in my home dvd player or even my work pc.

aside from cleaning out that registry from all the installed/uninstalled codecs and perhaps trying a different vid driver, i cannot think of anything else at this hour.

Sound card?

I have two computers, near identical stats but one is a laptop with onboard sound, the other has an audigy 2. When I try and watch q3 movies on the laptop it stutters like hell.

Allied: Have you tried updating your vid drivers? Sometimes they can cause oddities like this.

Jester: Thats pretty common with lower end sound cards.

Still the same. Actually it's worse, about every frame skips then it's ok for a few mins and skips again.
The k-lite that AmIdYfReAk suggested is the only codec pack installed. I d/l vlc but still the same thing.

I update cat drivers updated every thing I could think of on my machine and she's up to date. Any other ideas short of throwing it out the window? :(

I haven't installed any games yet. I brought my rig into work to work on it so I'll search the vast realm of the google for any insite :(

Thanks for the help/suggestions :)

np man. i'm just curious if it's just your card, which is now my suspicion. sucks you reformatted and it's still doing this. go get a cheap 32mb card, test, and bring it back for a refund.
