Before someone administrates this, I would like to say that it was done with serious intent. Look at this map and compare it to recent releases. Does this reall look like even close to being of standard quality of current maps? Look at that stupid star thing. I mean, what the hell? Look at all the perfections, the boring, random geometry. It is not a horrible map, of course, but this has been far surpassed by many maps, even q3 ones. Easily q3 ones. I just think that it is amazing how far the community has come without even realizing it.

Special Thanks

* Lloyd Morris for giving me access to Tempest Utopia and letting me
re-work the models for another project.
Sock had access to Tempest Utopia? Who knew about this? What the hell? IT IS CONSPIRACY.     :icon7:

Someone explain this bs right now.

I don't get this thread at all. Can you explain?

If this was 2000, a can would been opened.

I thought I did explain. Yeah, you're right. Lock this bullshit.

Seems to be more mapping related, so I'll transfer to LE and hopefully the guys there can make sense of it.

Are you drunk or something?

Maybe. But yes, it would be more appropriate here. I am still very upset that sock may have seen/played on Tempest Utopia/the meaning of life. I still really want to play this map, just to get it over with. I've even dreamt about it... all the problems of the world melted away and all there was... me in the tempest utopia. Oh man, don't hate me. I am not even trying to spam.

I don't understand the point of this thread.

As far as sock having seen Tempest Utopia is concerned, he and Lloydm worked together at Splash Damage, so it's not really that surprising.

Well I do understand the point of this thread but I don't really agree with it. I look at the Tempest Utopia screenshots and I *still* think they look awesome. Yes, the community has put out some amazing maps that are on par with the screenshots of Tempest Utopia, but I by no means believe that the community has inherently progressed to a "higher level" than in the year 2000. Sure, we've got bigger toys to play with (e.g. - Doom 3 engine), but when you strip it down to what a map is and the skill required to create that map, I still believe Tempest Utopia is something special (again, based on the screenshots).

I look through our own screenshots thread, and even in these days of bump mapping and per pixel lighting, I see shots of maps our own architects produced for q3 and am thuroughly more impressed. Style, complexity, composition and gameplay value have all something far more impressive than they once were. I mean, Lloyd himself I am sure has since then produced higher quality maps, what with working at splash damage and on d3.

I don't get it. You still really want to play this map, even when you say this map has been surpassed by other maps?
It's a weird way of complimenting current mappers ;)

Add another "this thread confuses me" vote. It's a weird mishmash of reflecting on the general level of community skill, pining for a map that you have a hard-on for, and, yeah, I'm guessing a fair dose of alcohol. :)

What he said. There are more toys and options to play with, but good general design sense remains what it's always been, and I certainly haven't noticed any fundamental change (other than, perhaps, level design being slightly less of a niche hobby now, and the tools certainly being friendlier, which means a larger pool of talent than there would have been otherwise).

Apparently some of those guys have been playing Tempest Utopia on a LAN for some kicks. So, yeah... not surprising that Sock took a little peek at it to make Pyramid of the Magician.

I kind of get what you are trying to say, but I don't entirely agree with you. I think it's just easier and there are more people in that caliber who can create amazing looking maps that are on par with Tempest Utopia.

Why can't there be at least a leak of it? You KNOW Lloyd would not even care.

have you tried the Sidrial mod for Q3? it's probably the closest you can ever get to TU's theme.

I wish the download worked... got a mirror?

It probably feels like TU in part because of Lloyd morris being on the set design team.
