Texture Settings Reverting to Medium / Bilinear

I have installed quake 3 gold with the latest patch, and have the latest drivers for my nvidia 6800gt. Asus a8v deluxe mb, 2 gigs kingston ram, Athlon 3500 processor, and Windows XP with service pack 2. My game resolution is 1024x768, with all video settings on high.
I set texture detail to high, and texture filter to trilinear. The problem is that this reverts back to medium texture detail, and bilinear texture filter whenever I restart the game. I can play the game when these settings are enabled with no problems, and have trilinear filtering enabled in my nvidia settings. These are the only settings that revert back upon the game restart. This happens in arena, and team arena versions.
Please let me know how to fix this. Thanks for any help

Only reason I can think of it's set in your autoexec.cfg (because the q3config.cfg file gets updated after every game). If you change it through the console, it might still be in your autoexec, which gets loaded every time you start the game.

hmm are you by any chance using a OpenGL D3D wrapper? They tend to have a 256x256 limit which alters graphic settings to medium automatically

I tried reinstalling the game: (Q3 gold) arena/ team arena/ then the 1.32 patch. I am still getting the same results. I noticed that I have to apply the texture detail, and filter settings TWICE to get them to change. However they still revert back to medium and bilinear upon restarting the game.
I have not modified any of the Q3, or Q3config.cfg files. Would this be a possible fix? If so, which files should be changed?
As far as I know, I am not using an open Gl d3d wrapper. Just the current Nvidia drivers. I play alot of shooters / this is the only one giving me minor problems. ( I should be happy ) Thanks for the input so far, please feel free to post any more possible solutions. Thanks

Try this:
Load the game and make the changes (twice, as you are doing).
Then bring down the console and enter:
\writecfg q3config.cfg
Now try reloading the game and see if it happens again.

I tried \writecfg q3config.cfg and it said "unknown command". I tried \writeconfig q3config.cfg and it said "writing q3config.cfg". I tried restarting the game with the same result. Maybe the quake gods are angry that I have put off playing this game for so long, and are forcing me to play with these settings.

Please keep the ideas coming, I appreciate the input!

Add your wanted cmds in your shorcut:
quake3.exe +set r_leetdetaillevel 1 +set cl_thisiswewt 0

Hmm very odd. Well done on getting the right command though, I *always* say the wrong one
I think the next step is to find your quake iii folder (usuallt c:\program files\quake iii arena\).
Look in the \baseq3\ folder there and find all the .cfg files. Now try deleting *all* the CFG files in the folder.
When you restart Q3, it'll be back to default settings all around. Now try setting your graphics up how you want them, and restarting the game.
If this doesn't fix it, I might be stumped

It might have something to do with video driver settings. They usually have preferences for texture detail for both OpenGL en Direct3D. Check the setting in the OpenGL settings and make sure the texture detail is set to highest.
