How many times do I have to enter my CD key?

Ok, so I found my Quake3Arena cd case the other day, with no CD in it, that sucked. So then a few days later going through old CD's, I found it, SUCCESS!

So I install it, and have a blast fraggin away, my only weird complaint is...it seems like every once in a while, at random, it will ask me for my CD key.

I have the latest updates, and my CD key is valid, as I bought the game, and have the CD key sticker on my jewel case.

What I'm wondering is, is there some kind of glitch, or does this happen to everyone else too?

Let me give you some instances of this happening:

I finish a multiplayer game, then when I quit to the main menu, and click multiplayer again to join a diff server, right when I click on multiplayer BAM it pops up asking for key.

Another time it happend was when I finished beating the single player game, at the end it asked me for the key.

Then a different time it popped up after installing the latest update.

Any ideas? Ghost in the shell?

Come on now, 22 views, and no replies? Am I the only one that has this problem?

It's most likely because you're playing a mod that doesn't have proper menu (UI) code. Mods are not supposed to ask for the cd-key. If you do enter it in a mod, there is a big chance you will be unable to connect to servers anymore! You can fix this by deleting the file "q3key" from the folders where those mods are installed ("Quake 3 Arena\Excessive\" for instance). q3key must ONLY be in the baseq3 folder.

This is probably in the FAQ though. :icon29:

are you actually unable to play or is it just asking you for the key all the time? i get that when i play vanilla q3 but just hit ok or whatever and move on...

No, I can play, I haven't tried hitting ok without entering a CD key, usually I just enter it, and keep going, it just gets rather tedius.

I'll check the mod folders and see if the q3key is there, thanks for the tip.

You can try making your key file read only if that doesn't help.
